GS Basic Kalahari - some advice needed

I'd be having a look at the timing chain.

ps. If you run it with the rocker boxes off, it'll chuck oil everywhere.

Oil drains out when you remove the rocker boxes so it is just a case of leaving the catch pan in place.
Only a small amount drips out in the time it takes to verify everything is working as it should, and it saves wondering.
Next step is pulling the front end off to expose the timing chain, but most folk might prefer to do the simplest things first.

As boff suggests,
It needs investigating, sooner rather than later.
I’ll put money on it being down to well intentioned human tinkering.
Some of the stuff I come across on the old bikes just makes me wonder:comfort

I dropped the bike off with Mikeyboy last week. The engine is now in bits and the most descriptive phrase I can think of is (& I'm quoting here) "...should have sounded like a bag of bolts". Just as well I'm in it for the long haul.

I will leave it to Mike to update with the photos. Anyone with a machine sensitive disposition may need to look away...

A tale of woe:blast
When the bike was dropped off,we ran the motor and the noise was exactly as demonstrated on the video clip,
It seemed to be coming from the timing chest so that was the first place to start looking.
On removal it looked like the chain had been replaced ,but the split link circlip had been fitted the wrong way round:confused:
Apart from this, nothing seemed amiss, the guide blades were ok,it was timed correctly, the tensioner checked out fine.
next up we took the sump off.
And were greeted with this

Obviously someone had partially stripped the motor, cleaned all the metal out and sold the bike on.
We now knew that the motor needed a full strip so we pulled the engine out and stripped it.
Then we came across this:barf

The metal from the cam and followers had wrecked the oil pump and housing,
Luckily the filter had done its job and the crank is ok.
The crankcase will be taking a trip to Germany for repair in the near future.
Watch this space:thumb

A day to pull it out and strip it,
Another day to clean and vapourblast etc.
Most of a day to build the engine
Another day to refit, recommission and road test,
Then retorque heads and reset valves etc next morning.

Holy Morolley ........ you'd never have guessed all that damage just by listening to the engine...

Usually you can hear pitted cam and followers... Some crafty bastard knew what they were doing when they sold that bike..

I'm glad i did a body swerve on that bike.. the "old instinct" still works :D

You have that right Neil,
The motor was pretty quiet.
Just a good job it was pulled apart without being ridden for miles, once the filter had blocked and the filter bypass had opened it would have been totalled

How close is that to looking for another engine Mike ?
Problem with replacement engines is you can buy as bad the one you have.
Plus as this isn’t just an R80/100gs a future buyer would want the bike to remain original.
Once motoradd Israel have sleeved the oil pump housing, and the engine has been rebuilt it will be as good as a good thing:thumby:

Its a shame you have to send it so far away Mikey the UK seems to have lost a lot of its Engineering capability for such jobs. Best wishes on the rebuild Berin I would never have suspected either give the excellent look of the bike.

I’know there are plenty of engineers in the uk that can sort it,
But motoradd israel are generally recognised as airhead specialists,
They do this particular job regularly.
Lot less hassle for someone that treats the job as a menu item.
