Digital Download of maps - Garmin

I have just purchased a digital download of the mapping for N America for an upcoming trip. The download seems to be tied to a device (a Nuvi 3490 for my car in this case). With the device plugged into my laptop, I can see these new maps in Basecamp. However, there does not seem to be an option to download the new maps to my computer so that I can work on routes in Basecamp without plugging in the device.

Am I missing something? Or do Garmin limit the functionality of such purchases, compared to the 'Lifetime Maps' of Europe that came with the device (and, indeed, with my Nav V)?

I suspect the map is uniquely coded to the device.

Indeed they do Paul. I have the same issue in that I can only see the maps when the device is plugged into the Mac.

When you download them, there's usually an option to load to computer as well as device, or device only...

In my case, I didn’t get the option to install to my computer.
