Alternative to output shaft circlip?

A customer's gearbox arrived this morning for an overhaul and re-shimming, (1991 R80RT).
It was obvious from the amount of sealant that someone had been inside the 'box before.
The output shaft is the non circlip type which had obviously bothered a previous owner, because, to fix the bearing
in place, he has welded the bearing inner to the shaft!!!
Never a dull day with gearbox rebuilds!
 
Dud the welding heat affect the hardened surface of the bearing in a way that shows visible wear? G'Won, post a pic for us saddos who love to see mechanical stuff.

The bearing looks and feels OK, but the shaft and bearing will be replaced during the build, I'll put them on ebay as a performance part!
 
I had the UJs in a paralever driveshaft replaced by a reputed factory trained BMW expert, and he welded the caps into the yokes, which seized them solid.
He said he always did them that way, and the would loosen up with use!
