Thought I would while sitting on the side of the road waiting for a tow truck (had a volt meter with me by chance) after working there was no charge back to the battery. Anyhow anyone got suggestions on an upgrade stator ???

It starts & runs from a jump but has no charge back to the battery if it runs for while the lcd display disappears after a while sort of going in to shock mode then total shutdown but can go through the whole procedure again by giving the battery charge again. Anyway I’m having fun with the RAC as it has taken 6 hrs to get me to a services on the M4 from Wales only to make me wait another 90 mins before changing tow trucks to take me rest of the way home (2.5hrs more) loads of fun

Have a look on asdvrider.com as the issue is well known and there are a few guides on how to check the output of the stator. The issue seems to affect the earlier bikes as BMW changed the flywheel design.

You will probably find your stator is burnt out. You can have it rewound (West County Windings) or buy a new one (EG Sport). I have had 2 rewound that have subsequently burnt out again so now I am trying the EG Sport version.

They recommend changing the rectifier/regulator at the same time but I am not convinced about this as I have had the same result. I did find some videos on Youtube on how to test the rec/reg.

Cheers

Hello

What's the average mileage for stator burn out ? Mines an early one (2008) but only done 18000 miles … just thinking ahead:)

Just been quoted £600 odd for a new stator please let me know of any other suppliers Motorworks etc don’t have any second hand ones to hand

I trust you’ll reconsider using the RAC in future,
They have previous for their inability to recover bikes except on specialist trailers (of which they don’t seem to have many).

All

As described above my alternator has gone kaput on my 2008 800GS (31000 miles). Do I need to replace all parts or can I just replace the stator i.e. for the Electro Sport ESG831??

I can get a second hand one but don’t want it to burn so soon again by replacing with an OEM one

Cheers R

All parts indide will be avialable ,

There is a place in Botley Hants that repairs alternators & i believe there used to be one in Gosport Hants too.

might be worth giving them a call.

Reg recs are normally just a couple of screws to pop it off and on

Usual sign of a reg/rec failure is lights going bright then dim repeatedly as your driving along

West Country Windings can rewind the stator a bit cheaper than the Electrosport stator. I have had 2 rewinds fail so am now trying the Electrosport version. I found some youtube clips on how to test the regulator. I get about 15000 miles from each rewind.

It seems to vary. Mine went over 50k before burn out on a 2009 model. Another well known member of this forum had his go at a higher mileage I think. I think his replacement is still going at 130k plus.

It will of course go at the most inconvenient time. I’d asked a certain service manager whether it was worth changing the voltage regulator which seemed to be the cause of the issue (I’ve been told that fails and takes out the stator and battery. That’s what happened with mine). He said don’t bother and of course it all blew up on the way to the ferry at Plymouth.;)

I was saved by Ocean BMW from missing the ferry and a long ride to Spain.

Yet again thanks for the helpful comments. I think I’m going to change to the Electro Sport Stator and the ESR711 regulator/rectifier unless someone shouts NO!

I take it the ESR711 is a straight swap out.

Hi

Thanks for reply. Don't think I'll ever get to those sort of mileages with this bike. Just used for 40 mile commute in Summer these days. Its 10 years old now so it might radioactively decay before I hit the high mileages !
