Hi

I have an 92 R80 (RT, but for the purposes of this thread shouldn't make any difference) and there is a whirring sound coming from the gearbox which I can hear in neutral, which goes when the clutch is pulled in. The noise is also present when coasting with the clutch pulled in. So it most likely is a bearing.

So, I was wondering if anyone can recommened a proven airhead box reconditioner? Would help if they are relatively close to me (North Wales near Chester) but postage is always an option.

Or am I better off just getting an exchange recon unit from motorworks?

Thanks.

For reference, here is the noise - you can hear it in the background. Scuse the wind noise at the end.

Richie Moore builds boxes which stand up to 130 HP in his sidecar racers- might be interesting to know how he does it!

Give him a call. He’s a new few bloke. He’ll tell you.

Fascinating how he builds the heads for them.

He used completely different internals. The last time I looked the internals were pushing £2k

A race box will probably have a close ratio cluster, and GBP2000- probably wouldn't buy you the OEM shafts and gears.
I was more thinking of the parts that fail first, which is usually the bearings and their set up.

Dont see the point in wasting RM's time asking for trade secrets when I have no need for a CR race box and have done almost 200,000 km on a box I rebuilt myself, and Oz post would probably want the price of the cluster for shipping one way!
Motorworks just quoted GBP 875- to ship a Funduro frame out here, so Oz post are not alone with ,er, ambitious charges.
