Question for ktoom single owners

I did - but told me all about why he was keeping the 640 Adv and what the 'issues' were with the 690 version

Also I was considering Lee's 690 ...,but went for a 500 instead as it was more potential to do both jobs better (short local work and longer type TET stuff)

Tims' Spain bike is a 13' plate 690 with 20k miles on and no problems, he liked it so much that he bought 2 :D.
I'll see how I get on with having the forks re-valved/shimmed later in the year and take it from there, will also see how the Bulgaria shipping stuff works out next week and maybe consider using them to access some interesting Balkans TET.
It's all good :thumb

Sorry thought you meant Timolgra, not Tim Cullis:blast
Timolgra has been inside the 690 engines and prefers the 640 Adv, having worked on both ..............hence why he sold his 690 Rallye

The single plug 690 seems to have more issues than the later twin plugged bikes. The earlier R's have better suspension - 275mm of travel front and rear. The forks definitely benefit from a revalve, Dr Shox did mine.

The restricted lock can be altered on the stops. It’s set wide from the factory. On earlier bikes you can also change the offset to help further, 22 or 24mm.

The 701 has a revised chassis which allows fitment of the new engine. It has changes at the head end (taken from the 450RFR) allowing much better steering lock. They also benefit from better suspension.

There’s a new 690 on its way.

Saying all that, I’m headed to 500EXC or FE501 this year. The 690/701 are great bikes, but with the reliability of the 500's and the vastly reduced weight it’s a better option for me.

Good answer

Totally agree with this - the main reasons for me swapping my 690 for a 500 were the suspension and the lack of weight. A fully loaded 690 is a fairly heavy bike to lift especially if it has gone past horizontal (I am getting on a bit!). If, however, my trip included a high ratio of road compared to trail riding a 701 might be the better bike :blast - horses for courses.

It’s the way to go...

15.5L tank good for 200+ Miles
GrandLoop stays nice and tight, carry’s the weight low and forward and when standing you can wedge your legs back on it
Small 10W LED spot on a ram mount is very versatile and easy to adjust on the move

hi,i have owned my 690 for 8 yr and in that time i have had 1 blocked injector
mine was the first or one of the first rally raid bikes

helennikonno1383.jpg

first trip away on it

PA250008.jpg

it evolved into this

P4300077.jpg

and now i have junked all the injection stuff and put a carb on it same as the rally rep 690...was 2 ecu's 85 wires load of sensors shit fuel pump....now 1 ecu 13 wires even without a pulse fuel pump i get 10ltr from the rear tanks and 4.6 from the front 2 gravity fed...getting around 55-60 to the gallon pulls like a train or like a 525 on steroids

loz

I really like that, turning it more simple and improving at the same time :thumb2

Not quite true, it wasn't a Rallye !
I always thought my 690 would be brilliant with an FCR carb, at the time I didn't know how to do it otherwise I'd have kept it :)

Although heavier, it was the 640 chassis I preferred.

Hmmm is it possible I wonder, 690 with an FCR in a 640adv chassis :)
