Doing some research and apparently Kaliningrad lost its special status but they were planning to introduce 10 day electronic visas to replace the 3 day ones you get at the boarder. They were due to do it this year but the Russian government sites I read indicate some time spring next year. Not sure of cost yet.

I'm sorted for going there and had just done the plan for coming back. Once again, thanks Wapping. From Gdansk to Szczecin following the route (a shortcut added 'cause I don't want to go to Slupsk) it is a near enough 280 mile day. I must say that the accommodation in Poland is cheap and all get good reviews. We will see if it lives up to it. Apart from hotels you can book a whole apartment, 1 bed or studio, for near enough the same price as a room. All within walking distance to the city centre. I'm looking forward to see Poznan, it was left largely untouched in WW2 meaning the architecture was preserved, unlike Gdansk which was reduced to rubble and what you see today was rebuild.
