For some reason, all of my favourites, google search results and links from emails (such as parcel tracking) no longer work.

The links I have are http and previously they would auto-convert to https if neccessary, but that seems to have suddenly stopped. Some links I can edit to https and they work, but a great many do not and I end up looking at a BT Smarthub startup page.

Have I missed something? This only started happening a couple of days ago on both my and my wife's laptops.

My laptop uses Windows 10 and the wife is on Windows 8.

I use pale moon and edge and the wife uses IE.

All help gratefully received.

Look for and "HTTPS Everywhere" for PaleMoon. I think the the pucker HTTPS Everywhere stopped working from v27 but some say it still works.
Microsoft browsers don't support it. Junk 'em.

Thanks and nice try but unfortunately no cigar. I installed chrome, added the https everywhere extension and it still doesn't work.

For example, google 888 poker, then click the first advert entry. It takes me to my BT Homehub start page! I'm starting to think that the BT Homehub firmware update from 06/08/2018 has screwed something up. I can't even uninstall anything that automatically connects to the web.

I also changed the HKEY variable for default prefix to https: and that didn't work either.

Investigations continue and all contributions welcome. I've only worked with computers since 1983 and recently completed a degree in IT technology so I obviously need all the help I can get. I'm thinking of calling my Mom.

Change your dns setting to something other than your BT home hub something like Google on 8.8.8.8, it's not your computer but your hub that is redirecting you. Are the sites that have stopped working random or could they be classed as adult like your poker one? If they can be classed as adult then you have ended up with the government family filter on your Internet. It can be turned off.

Thanks for the response, but changing the DNS made no difference. I downloaded the latest version of Firefox and added HTTPS Everywhere and that doesn't work either. It's not adult site related, it seems to be any link that has http://www fails and any link that has https://www works - it doesn't seem to automatically switch to https for some reason. Here's a couple of examples results where I end up at the Homehub start page:

I've changed nothing here, it affects both windows laptops but not the android devices. We haven't had any recent windows updates and it's 2 different versions of Windows anyway. The only thing I can see is the BT Homehub firmware update 06/08/2018 which is about when the problems started. I guess I'll be spending the day on the phone with BT.

Did you change dns in the alternate config? We have had all sorts of problems at work with our VPN on BT Internet. It blocks our internal dns servers so they can't find company servers. Adding dns to the alternate config works. In your case it should be BT that sorts you out but we don't have the time to do it for hundreds of users at work.

Sorry I mean the advanced tcp setting and not the alternate config so network adapter properties/ipv4/properties/advanced and the dns tab add other servers in the top box

Hi & thanks again but the 2 google dns addresses are already in that top box. I guess BT are my only option.

Hi Redboots, unfortunately that problem is the exact opposite of the problem I have - I can ONLY access https sites. I'm talking to BT at the moment and they seem to think it is reasonable that 2 different computers with 2 different operating systems should have the same problem the day after their firmware update. The girl I am talking to has given up and I am now trying to get hold of someone who can do more than suggest a dnsflush.

OK problem is solved!

I got hold of a girl at BT who knew what she was doing and she agreed it's the firmware update for the Homehub4. The fix is to disable the Smart setup utility and the problem goes away. They will be working to fix the firmware update in order to avoid eleventy thousand support calls.

Thanks for all of your help gents!
