Got 10 days off starting 8th October. Thinking of going to Austria and don't know if the weather is still ok and are the passes still open. Has anyone got any experience/knowledge on such matters ?.

You may find that the weather will be different each year starting 8th October.Wapping will be along shortly with a full explanation.

As you’ve apparently settled on going to Austria for 10 days commencing 8th October, go and you’ll find out. You’ll also be able to maybe answer the question when another bod makes the same enquiry next year.

Your choice - risky IMHO. They had some terrible weather only a month ago, passes closed, floods etc, but who can tell what October may bring.

How about Spain/Portugal?

Thought about Spain but the ferries to Santander and Bilbao are full.

Maybe no help at all video below, but it is funny, as for the weather in Austria just go for it, book hotels or find campsites as you go along, that way you can change areas if weather is crap.

Yet, if he’d have asked in May what the weather would be like in August, the chances are he’d have been told it would be hunky dory. Seems it’s a good job he didn’t.

I have never been to Austia where is it? :nenau

I have been to the Alps in October a few times before and the weather has always been a lottery from valley to valley.

Alps are always a lottery even in the Summer, today the Grossglocker is bathed in sunlight but a couple of weeks ago it was shut for 2 days due to heavy snow, it may well be that the high passes are either all shut due to snow or if they have an Indian Summer then all of the passes will be open.

You may have a problem in some of the more touristy areas that the summer seaon is finished and a number of hotels will be closed prior to the start of the winter season.

I would keep any plans fluid and travel where you are getting better weather rather than sticking to a rigid schedule .

Eifel or Black Forest might be a safer bet or even a fall back option if the Austria forecast looks iffy nearer the time. Hotels shouldn’t be a big issue either way. Any mountainous area can be a lottery from September onwards. You can get some great weather or early snow.

was there end of august, the wettest ive ever been on a bike, very unpredictable in my experience

Going to Switzerland in October and have been before at this time of year with everything weather from beautiful sunshine to snow. Great time of year to go if the weather gods are with you as most of the tourist crowd have gone home. :thumb2
