Gael warning in the Congo

Work has been continuing on the GS today - scary to see (even if only a photo)

but I got a call to say that they found the part and it is while and runnuagain!

So off there in the morning to see whether it is indeed runnuwell enough to continue.

Apparently the villain of the piece is the Throttle Position Sensor (well divined Steptoe of this parish!) so I will need to track one of those down, but they tell me it is adjusted to run adequately until then

Glad things are going to well. I'm sure you will get local advice there but Ihla do Cabo is a narrow spit off town that certainly used to be a peaceful haven worth going to.

Where do you plan to go into Namibia?

I spent 4 weeks holed up in the Presidente hotel overlooking the Ihla back around 2002 and I hated every minute I was in Luanda but all good things come to pass and eventually I got on a flight to Johannesburg and from there onwards to London.

The cheapest evening meal in the Presidente was the mixed buffet at $40 plus beer was $10 per bottle so my expenses took a right hammering 😀

So whilst I awaits update tomorrow onival sourcing I will post this appeal here:

Has anyone got a spare flywheel starter ring gear for a 2003 r1150gs that I could buy/get sent DHL to Luanda?

I've emailed a mate in South Africa to see if he can chase breakers / dealers there for you. Luke

May have changed but there used to be cheap places on Ihla, way below the city hotel prices which really take the piss

Thanks Luke! May also try to source in U.K. and my wife could bring it out when she comes out

So finally after three rollercoaster days the GS seems to be working well despite the need for a new TPS.

Most of these guys were working for the last 2-3 days to get the bike running and they achieved that. And they ended up doing it for a modest amount despite Angola’s high cost economy!

So a shout out for Romolo and all the team at Wilson Martins in Luanda Sul - they have had the bike in pieces more than once as they worked to tune it!

Still a Hall sensor to fit once I have a TPS...but that’s for another day!

Thanks Quinten. Did you manage to catch the earlier instalments? (Gael warnings in West Africa).

Jock: we will take the coast road towards Lobito if we can.

As it said in the closing lines of the film 'Best Exotic Marygold Hotel' ... if I remember correctly

"If it hasn't worked out for the best, then maybe it's not finished working out yet' :D

Good one Simon :thumb

Thanks is Micky but it’s Jim who is the calm and technically competent one of the Dynamic Duo

We had a pleasant ride down the coast from Luanda, ending up in Port Amboin. We decided to k ixk off early so we could enjoy the beach.

So far both bikes running well today

First order of business after finding lodgings was for me to send my smiley Moto boot off for gluing

Thanks Luke. I contacted them through FB at 12:30 and they already confirmed they have a TPS for me

Meanwhile it seems the boot repairer does house calls:

I explained I didn't want it stitches on as would let water in, bs then we headed to the beach opposite the hotel

Starting it now! I'm laid up ill at home, unable to do anything bike related except read about other people's adventure. It's keeping me sane while daytime TV tries to send me mad.

A few pictures of our route today from Luanda to Porto Amboim. Some great trees and by the roadside giving welcome shade. Inevitably a motorbike disappearing into the distance. Great to see the GS running well.

Some dried fish at our stop half way and people seeking shade where they can find it. The sea was never far away and as we went further south the land turned from green to brown.
