Guys, I recently purchased my 03 1150gs. I emailed Pidcock BMW & asked if they could service just the ABS unit. Well I got a quote back for a full bike service £550, I about fainted. So I replied stating just the abs unit, £220. Well looks like a self service then, jeasus a porsche service is less.

I used to get Pidcocks to do my ABS fluid change. The last time they did that, and balanced the TBs they charged £160. That was probably 7 or 8 years ago. Bike ran crap after then and made myself a manometer to do the TB balance. It was way out and 20 mins of fine adjustment made the bike much smoother. I also learnt how to change the brake fluids in all the circuits. Not that difficult once the tank is off. A chap from Motorworks talked me through the procedure so now do it myself every 2 years. If I ever have a problem with the ABS unit I will remove it and turn the bike into a non ABS bike.

Do you have ABS or the servo ABS. A whole world of differnce in work involved and reliability.

I see you're in Loughborough. I'm a bit further north in Derbyshire but work in Kent and commute. I found a great place (private) down in Kent that's much cheaper and great too. If you do find someone up near you, please post.

Mikeyboy is about 20 minutes from Loughborough. He's just north of Melton Mowbray, the other side of Six Hills.

PM him or call him. I'm sure he'll be able to help you.

Hi, it has the Servo system, I can service bikes but I’ve never come across these systems. I kind member had sent me a link to do it, I’m just abit nervous about upsetting the system

Clues have already been provided.. quite a good few independents are recommended here.

..but that posh lighting and those Gaggia coffee machines doesn't pay for themselves eh.

You’ll be fine. The control circuits are just like bleeding convention brakes, except the bleed nipple is located on the servo unit instead of the calliper.

The power circuits are even easier as all you have to do is crack open the bleed nipple on the calliper and gently press the brake lever to get the pump to run. You can regulate the flow of fluid either by pressure on the brake lever or the bleed nipple. You have to watch you don’t empty the reservoir, or you’ll have to start again. But the reservoir is quite large for both circuits.

The only grief with the whole system, is you have too remove the fuel tank.

Once you’ve done it, you’ll wonder what all the fuss was about.

But you could always ask mikeyboy if you can watch him do it.

Yes but, yes but stolzy.

If his bike has ABS which only needs a thorough bleed and replace fluids, and otherwise it works, why ditch the ABS ? Just learn how to DIY the ABS bleed properly.

An ABS-equipped bike is much safer in an emergency than a non-ABS one.

Towards the end of the nineties, I had sequential non-ABS and ABS-equipped 1100S sporty machines. The later one gave me much greater confidence whilst thrashing around the wonderful granite-surfaced deserted roads in remote Scotland. You could go round a corner as fast as you liked, knowing you'd most likely be able to cut your speed rapidly in a straight-ish line if needed.

Only trouble was, those granite chippings up there tore the guts out of tyres; no wonder the bike-tyre specialist near Aviemore did a roaring trade all day long in the season.

I had a similar shock from Lind in Norwich. Brought a 2003 R1150GSA in 2017 and asked how much for a good going over and full service. Between £700 & £800!!!!!

Ended up giving it a full service myself (£45 + fluids) and got an ex-BMW service engineer to do the clutch & brake fluid change (ABS and Servo) and balance the throttles (don't know how to do those bits) and charged me £90. And he connected the bike from work.

These are really easy to work on if you're semi-capable and parts are dirt cheep.

BMW main dealers are taking the piss!!!

A servo one isn't..... in fact it is a bloody liability and fails dangerous. I have had 2 fail on me now. When they go, they go without any warning whatsoever. You can be trundling on safe in the knowledge that your system has been fully serviced to the day, the motor whirrs reassuringly and the bike hauls up in short order, even fully laden. Then the next time you pull the brake lever... THERE IS NOTHING, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, it isn't even poor braking, it goes from working perfectly to ABSOLUTELY NO BRAKES WHATSOEVER in one pull of the lever..... tell me what is safer about that.

In reply to Steptoes post, I have got servo ABS brakes on my bike. Yes they are a bit more work to bleed, but they are certainly do able.

I don't think the dealers are interested in older stuff nowadays. I phoned Ocean Motorrad to price up some parts for my R1100GS and the guy on the phone never knew they made one! A guy I know took his 650GS in there with a speedo problem and they charged him an hour's labour to clean the front ABS ring. Not good when you consider that the speedo is operated from the rear wheel and it was a speedo fault in any case. I wouldn't have believed him if it wasn't for the fact that I bought the bike from him and have the invoice.

Picture this - brand new to me 1150 adventure, tootling along the lanes in the south of france, braking into a corner in beautiful sunshine on gorgeous roads... NOTHING. Pulled the brake then NOWT, absolutely nothing. Shat my pants. Narbonne BMW wanted to keep the bike and fly me home to fly back the week or so after to ride it back home. Nice touch but no ta. So I rode it all the way back from the Med to St Malo without touching the brakes. I really did. :friday
