Hi. Welcome to our journey around the world.
We are Mike Giles (RTGLOBE) and John Higgs and have been friends for about 29 years so we already know the exact decibel rating for each others snoring (well, to within 4 decimal places anyway)!
Our jouney started in Alaska in July 2005 & will end in New Zealand around July 2007. Along the way we plan to cover 6 continents and 42 countries.
We are using 2 x BMW F650 Dakars which have been modified and prepared for the anticipated strains and demands that will be placed upon them.

The Dakars in their first guise, the jerry can was later replaced by an in-line auxiliary fuel tank.
We both attended the level one off-road BMW course in March this year in the hope that we might stay alive long enough to enjoy the whole journey !

Our motivation for the trip came from a general disenchanment with the personal 'rewards' offered by our careers and the catalyst of an article Mike read on an around the world journey in MCN in 2001, and a Touratech pannier with a bullet hole that John saw on E-Bay.
We didn't want the trip to purely be about ourselves and so we have chosen to promote Tearfund, a Christian charity. Tearfund work very hard to equip and enable people in different countries caught in poverty traps to create useful emloyment to sustainably support themselves with dignity. This is achieved without eroding the differing cultures they encounter. Currently they are working in over 70 countries worldwide. Further information can be found at http://www.tearfund.org
We spent about a year planning and preparing, and have sold our houses to finance the trip. John was an IT Project manager and Mike was a Patent Analyst.
We aim to provide an update each week of where we are and what we're doing, supported by some images.
