Both the wife and I had F650 Gs's a couple of years back. I've now got a 1200 Gs, but my wife has a sportsbike. She fancies a trailee type bike for touring, but doesn't want to give away too much power. Are there any tuning options for the 650 that could perhaps get it up to 65 BHP or so, without destroying reliability, and preferably still be covered by the BMW warranty. Thanks in anticipation.

The simple answer is no......the basic Rotax engine has already been modified by BMW to give reasonable reliability/performance

On pre 04 models a slight increase in performance can be gained by changing the exhaust (various) and filter (K&N) then fitting a Techlusion Power Box but it will have to be set up on a Dyno to get the best overall result, all info at -http://faq.f650.com/GSFAQs/GSPerformanceModsFAQ.htm
As for 65 bhp, even Ron Woods who AFAIK is the only Rotax tuning specialist only claimed a maximum of 60 bhp for his stage 3 tune (race pistons, cams, valves + enlarged ports and manifold) but he seems to have stopped tuning the later models.

yeah, nostromo,s right , i think lot,s of people me included would love ,to have another 15/20 horsepower from the 650, then it would be perfect for me , but i really hope that the new bmw paralell twin 800cc engine will be fitted to a dakar type bike , i live in hope

Team Pami can do just about all you would ever want , but only with the older carb'ed bikes, and only at great exspense .

For more power and speed. The lady needs to go look at the Suzuki 650 Vstrom, or even the 1000 if she's confident enough.

My girl friend is about 5'6" and she could reach the ground easely on both.

The V twin is very easy to manage and the girls seem to get on with them quite well.

Just for info's sake the 1000 Vstrom with the panniers, top box, heated grips and centre stand is £6999 otr.

Thanks for that VAL H. Should perhaps have said that wife's current sports bike is a 2005 Fireblade. Even though she can only get a bit of one foot down at a time no problem on good roads. Hopefully we plan to do Eastern Europe, Morocco and some gentle off road when she finishes work in the near future so a trailee really is the way she wants to go. Fireblade to remain.

Me too,

I had my old air cooled Rotax (CCM) up to 58 bhp at the back wheel which involved compression increase, flowed head, bigger carb, high lift cam, double valve springs, modded exhaust (stupid loud), modded airbox, rebore (636cc). It was a hoot and reasonably reliable (only two rebuilds in 10,000 miles).

In single road racing the old aircooled lumps are taken up to 75 bhp but are VERY fragile.

But, what's the point of doing that to a GS ?? I reckon the best route would be to sort the suspension and brakes or, secondly, a sorted exhaust, power commander and K&N giving you another, say 5 bhp.

Sorting the handling always wins in my book over engine output, and, yes the CCM had sorted shocks and brakes before I played with the engine.

Just my 2p's worth

Andres

Take your point Outtomunch but the 1200 Gs makes twice the power of the 650, and weighs only 30 Kg's more. I don't hear too many 1200 owners saying they have too much power.
I agree with you re the mods to improve handling, but IMHO the current 650 Gs power doesn't exactly overwhelm the bike.
