Firstly, thanks to those who gave advice last time but the thread has vanished now.

Looks like the wife and I are going to a wedding at Kyalami near Jo'burg mid-April and thought we'd take a week or maybe 10 days to tour a little bit but sadly by car, cos the wife won't go on the bike at all.

Thought about either a circular route or a one-way trip in a hire car.

Can anyone suggest a route or two worth taking please, as there's some stunning country out there and I'd hate to miss a road simply cos I didn't know who to ask.

if you don't mind a longish day trip (aboout 700km depending on the route) you should go to pilgrims rest/sabie. you'll be extremely frustrated in the car because the mountain roads are awesome on a bike.
a shorter trip will be to hartebeestport dam, about 45min from kyalami.
or the cradle of mankind which is where they found some bones and said that its our ancestors :nenau, also about 45min out.

Somehow I don't think the wife will want to visit Teazers ;)

heh, sneak off to the 'motorbike shop'.

Actually northside bmw is in Fourways, a half hour away. See if you can rent an HP2 for the day, or blag a long test-ride.

My knowledge is very limited to the area between Fourways and Midrand (near kyalami).

The Dam is quite nice as posted above, and there's a small Zoo there as well.

A trip to 'Carnivores' Diner is good, if you ever wanted to dine on Giraffe (yuk), Crocodile (yuk), Kudu (tasty), and other assorted game animals. It's out that way but I couldn't give you exact directions.

There's a casino across the main road from Fourways as well, which has some nice places to eat even if you aren't into gambling.

.

Crocodile is lovely, zebra nice, but Kudu was like old boots !!

Pilgrims Rest is worth a trip, but bear in mind that the 3-4 hours trip only shows you mountains like you see in Scotland or Wales (it looks very like Wales) ... and it is Boar country ....

Jo'burg is not he most rivetting place to kill days, but a flight can be had to Cape Town, for not a lot, and well worth it. Loads to do and see ...

4 weeks ago all biking stuff was very expensive ... probably 25% more than the UK .....

Petroria is worth a 1/2 day trip, as is Soweto ( but go with Jimmy the Face's Tours). Kimberley, if you fancy the drive has a huge hole.
Pleanesburg and Sun City are within 3 hours reach ....

Hi Davel
Must agree with Toucan the Pilgrims Rest/Sabie area is great. Think seriously about a trip to Cape Town lots to see and do flights between Johannesburg and Cape Town not to expensive and plenty B&B's around Stellenbosch Town and Wineroutes good visit and a day trip to Hermanus via Gordons Bay, Rooiels, Bettys Bay, Kleinmond, Hermanus. Lots more to see and do. Regards Mark P
