12GS to 12GSA tank conversion

Some where in the region of £850.00 from your local BM dealer

Say you keep your bike for 40,000 miles and you average 200 miles per standard tank (20 litres according to BMW) and 330 miles per ADV tank (33 litres according to BMW) and you always allow your tank to run to this point before refuelling. You would therefore fill the standard bike 200 times and the modified bike 121 times, a saving of 79 fills. If we now assume that an average fill including stopping, filling, paying and getting going takes 10 minutes that equates to a time saving of 13 hours 10 minutes for your £850 and 6 hour fitting time a net saving of 7 hours 10 minutes. If we now divide the £850 cost by the 7 hours 10 minutes that equates to £64.56 per hour saved. Adding to this, if you only covered 18,227 miles over the life of the bike the time spent fitting the tank would equate to the time saved on refuelling. All this seems an expensive way to avoid stopping when in reality very few of us ride over the standard 1200's range before taking a breather

My light hearted take on the subject :D

Hello SQD8R,

greatings from Detroit from the german who also changed the fuel tank to the ADV tank.

One question regarding the fuel control unit:
As my GS shows after the transversation to the ADV tank after 300 km reserve, and than will jump between reserve (yellow) and short before reserve, did you reprogrammed a control unit or something regarding
the fuel gauge?

Thanks for the instruction
