Round 'n' round in circles.........
 Cycling home tonight, same route as always, the road from Hockley to Beoley.

Just past the crossroads to Umberslade Farm, a car overtakes me.

There is also half a dozen cars coming towards me, but the car had plently of room to overtake and get back to the correct side of the road.

Then out of the blue one of the cars in the middle of the on coming row, pulls out to overtake them.....WTF

The end result wa the car that had just overtaken me hit the car that was overtaking the others fecking head on.

Not a glancing blow, feckin square on front to front.

The rear wheels of the car that had overtaken me lifted up in the air and the car rotated 180 degrees with the impact and landed in the hedgerow on my side of the road.....

The whole thing happened less than 20' in right in front of me, the noise was tremendous.

The bloody impact was huge, she was travelling at no more 50 mph at a guess, but he was accelerating quite hard, so prehaps 70 mph +?

WTF this bloke was thinking of when he started to overtake, heavens knows? :nenau

Its a dead straight section of road.....but just how close do you like it. :spitfire

I stopped, had no choice the road was completely blocked with debris. Lots of people were running around like headless chickens.

It was a young girl driving the car that over took me, thankfully she was ok.

I saw her being helped out of her car, but personally I would have waited for the Ambulance.

The guy was ok, but he was sobbing like a good 'un, and so he should have do, dopey twat. He was the cause of a accident that could have been a whole lot worse.

I decided that more than enough people were on the scene so I slowly eased away to continue my ride home.

After which it was a nice steady ride home, thinking about what "might" have been. :(

I must admit to being more than a little bit shocked at seeing this accident, brings it home just how easy it is get get involved.

Wrong place, wrong time?

Had I not stopped to put my waterproof jacket on a few miles back, then I would have been that 20' further on along the road. :bow

I have to admit to having a very large rum & coke with my evening meal as well.

If you had been on your motorbike, you would have been nowhere near the place.
Conclusion :... Motorbike safer.

I know the stretch of road well and also know the crossroads.

I have witnessed many people overtaking on the approach to these crossroads which are very busy come rush hour. :nono

People just see the straight and go for the overtake ignoring everything else around them!

Glad your ok though.

Scary stuff indeed...glad you're unscathed.....

Even if she was only doing 50 and he was doing similar, that's still 100mph impact speed....amazing neither of them were mushed up

Have another Rum'n Coke...Doctor's orders ;)

Several rum & cokes on the way, trust me.

I must admit to being nothing short of gob smacked to see either of them moving, let alone walking.

It says a lot about the design of modern cars........

There was a thing on top gear (or one of the other petrol head porn shows) a few months ago where they crashed a Smart car into concrete blocks at 70......fekk me what a hit!!!!

The upshot was though, as in most modern cars, the 'cage' and crush zones are sufficient to protect the body inside from the impact....but the deceleration of the body that you can't avoid (unless the car's stupidly long with metres of crumple zone) in that sort of impact is what's going to be killing people from now on.......a body can't go from 70 to standstill in 3 feet without ripping its internal organs apart  :(

Did you speak to the fuzz about it??? Sounds like that muppet deserves some trouble for the way he was driving :eek

To be honest, right or wrong, I left before any of the emergency services arrived.

I saw the young girls face, naturally she looked very shocked, no dam suprise really. :spitfire

She did look in a great deal of pain, she was henched forward as she was escorted away from her car. She was holding her chest with both arms crossed, which I expect was injury caused by the sudden force at which she stopped and the huge amount of stress of the seat belt.

But I decided that there were more than enough people that had witnessed what had happend.

No excuse I know, but it was pissing it down with rain and I still had 7 miles left to ride home. The brief time that I was stopped for, I went very cold, mainly on account that I was already soaked to the skin. :(

Alan, I appreciate that you felt that you should go as you felt there were enough witnesses there already. Not a problem with that at all.

However, you might want to ring the local plods and let them know you witnessed it, as, bearing in mind your position in terms of proximity to the 'collision', as they have to be called nowadays, you will make a fecking cracking witness. It may well help any police investigation enormously.

Just a thought. If I was investigating it, I would want to talk to you, mate.

Cheers :thumb

Alan

Clearly a close call - I'm glad that you're not hurt.

But I'm with Banana on this - you ought to offer yourself up as a witness. This tosser ought to be walking - your words might make the difference.

I rode past the accident scene this morning on the way to work, all the debris has been cleared, but it looks like one of the cars collected a road sign as well.

There is now a lot of sand in the road, I expect that one or both of the engines split in the huge impact and dropped all the engine oil?

I must admit that after after several  last night, combined with a restless nights sleep and a 17 mile ride into work, its fair to say that I am not feeling my best this morning. :(

Yes, you guys are right, I will ring Solihull Police station this morning and offer a witness statement.

It still amazes me about what the hell this guy was thinking off......it really does :nenau

The poor girl never stood a earthly chance, I didnt even see her brake lights come on. But even if she had stopped dead in the road, there was just no where for her to go to avoid the impact.

How one persons stupidity can effect some many people in just a few seconds, but thats life I suppose!

Alan - I know that road extremely well, and it is quite a fast section. Glad to hear you're OK.

Back to your old route past Wedge's Bakery? :nenau

Regards,
Rich

Well scarey! Glad you're ok.

I race bikes in Grand Fondo category here and in my training (and in the races coem to think of it) I 've seen all sorts, in fact EVERY time I go out on my bike (4-5) times a week I have one close shave and it's NOT fun. :eek

Understand the Rum but it might not help getting up the hills..

Im not sure if its Solihull's area however it maybe on warwickshire's area 01926 41500. :nenau

Jeez Alan - just caught up with this one. Sounds like you're OK - thank goodness. As a cyclist too, that sort of thing scares me shitless - on a bike you've not really many options when it happens. So I reckon your guardian angel will have a sore head this morning as well. Mind you - might as well give the buggers something to do, eh?

Nice one on calling the Police station as well.

But just 17 miles to work? Lightweight. :D

:sleep

Yes I guess that you are right MMC, only 160 miles a week riding to and from week. But then theres the 40 mile training ride every Saturday morning together with the Sunday morning 60 mile trash as well.

So thats just 260 miles, every week.......feckin' lightweight indeed. :dabone

I've stopped going past there to be honest, if I can really help it, the smell of freshly baked food is sometimes just to much.

After a long day at work, only half way home and then your nostrils get filled with the smell of some mouth watering delights. :clap

Who ate all the pies, who ate all the pies........ :D
