I'm sure the question has been asked before but from the UK to Poland what's the best route to take. We need to get to Gdansk to start our trip and don't want to spend hours on motorways. Any advice would be much appreciated:ChrisKelly

Even if you take the longer ferry crossing from Harwich to Hoek of Holland, it's still nearly 1,100 road miles to Gdansk.

You say you want to avoid motorways. How long have you allowed to get to Gdansk?

Hi!

I was in Poland by car 3 years ago.
It could be easy to find streets beside the Autobahn in Germany.
In Poland you have only short pieces of Mway in the north and you have to pay.
Calculate 50km/h in Germany and in Poland too.
The Transit road from Sceczin dir. Gdansk is very very busy crowded with trucks.
Trucks from Poland and many Baltics-very crazy drivers.
There´s no Motorway - be careful.
The streets surface is very bad at many parts.
Some of my friends told me about problems with polish police.
Especially in case of an accident you can be safe that you´re wrong.
Make good insurances before you start.

Our expierience with all polish people we met was absolutely positive.
Friendly people in hotels, restaurants .........
and very very cheap meals and beverage.
I can recommend you a hotel in STAROGARD GDANSKY 70km south of Gdansk.

No experience with gdansk, travel from Berlin to Lodz - motorway is finished, 140kmh all the way allowed!

Polish people are great, enjoy it, hope sombody can help with the route, but would agree that some of the roads are shocking! When i used to use the alternatives to the motorway, it was often a free for all, 3 laner most of the time so be careful!

Ferry to Hamburg if it's still running then M-way via Berlin to Polish Border. Non M-way roads in Poland used to be pretty poor and driving standards not much better! Be careful!

If Poland is your goal, you should take motorway. From Hoek of Holland you have m-y untill Kraków. I have done part of road to Gdańsk from Międzyzdroje and I always try to use side roads , so in Poland you can do it. If you have plenty of time, you can do it also in Germany, side road are even better, less adventure:rolleyes:

Greetings from snow white Kraków

I rode my R1100RS from Zebrugge to Nowe, south of Gdansk in one sitting- 27 hours and over 1000 miles.Germany was a breeze, but Poland was another story, terrible roads and mad truckers. I crossed into Poland at Frankfurt an Oder, and back via Szceczin. I rode right through the night and actually fell asleep at one point...took it far easier on the way back, sticking to the coast right through Germany and Holland and it was a far more relaxing ride. Took 3 days but well worth the extra time and distance. Gdansk,Gdynia and Sopot are beautiful and well worth spending a bit of time exploring.
