One of our favourite little Sunday afternoon rides is to go up to Aldburgh for what must be some of the best fish and chips in the country, plus an ice cream from the specialist shop over the road.

We went out yesterday and had a great couple of hours riding it, so we thought it would make a nice potential day out for a group or for those who don't know the area.

No specific date in mind yet, just gauging interest really, so please pipe up if you fancy it :thumb2

It would be on a Sunday, and if non-local people fancy it, we have beds available here and you're more than welcome to come down on Saturday to make a mini-weekend of it :thumb2

General idea.....

Start Harwich in late morning
Harwich > Manningtree (lovely fast flowing twisty back road)
Manningtree > Royal Hospital Holbrook>Wherstead
From there, a double back towards Jimmy's farm then off into Constable country
Constable country....Dedham Vale (for the Philistines, that's the place in 'The Haywain' , Flatford

Then.....Orwell viaduct and pop off the A14 DC again, through some nice wigglies to Woodbridge, Rendlesham forest then out to Aldburgh

Round trip will be approx 150 miles, bimble stylee pace ideal for pillions (and we'll be on the K100 so our top speed on these roads is limited to 120 :blast)

Aldburgh and area:

The queue at the blue gallion can be long, but after about 2 it's fine and WELL worth it :thumb

Rough time 6 hours in all
As above, beds available if you fancy coming from further afield, and once we leave Aldburgh, there's always the option of shooting off to the Midlands and scary places further away via the A14 from the area.

Interest?

Yep could be interested. I'm overdue a trip to see my parents in Colchester so if the dates work, I'll be in. Maybe a chance to catch up with Andy Malton too - he knows those roads rather well, especially the Harwich to Manningtree "cresta run". Keep us posted:thumb

Date flexible, and because of the nature of it, weather dependant :thumb2

Certainly before the end of Sept though, and probably at the beginning?

Sunday 1st Sept is a possibility, but I have to arrange child/dog care so Rosie and I will see if that's possible asap :beerjug:

I keep staring at the mermaid, is it possible to have a "thing" about a sign over a chip shop?

Might be tempted. Can't do the 1st Sunday of the month though.

Will the ugly old get be on the bench, or was that just bad luck that he was there when you took the photo?? :D:D

We're away first two weeks of Sept, but might be up that way over the next couple of weekends.

It's amazing isn't it.
I've seen well over a dozen people working in there, and it's just non-stop.

I have no idea how profitable a chippy is, but given that small ones elsewhere stay open with barely one customer in at a time, the owners of the gallion must be happy bunnies :clap

In years gone by I ran a chip shop in Clacton :eek We made around a 100% in those days. Food retail can be a very good earner :thumb

Loaded up my old Mapsource today to plot a proper route and for some reason my old map files are fubar'd. :(

Downloading another set now, and will get a better plan in place....not, tbh, that it really needs it, it's not a bleedin' Oddysey, all the roads are fairly familiar and the destination is easy, but there are some nice little villages I want to string together without any backtracking :)

If you can get it all together for next Sunday the 8th of September I can make it. Don't mind coming down to Harwich on the morning to join up. Must tell you in advance that I prefer the Chish an Fips at the harbour at Southwold. Just so you know like.
Not that I would mention it on the day. Oh no. :D

Anyways I waved at Harwich a few weeks back from HMS Ganges but you ignored me. :(

Granddaughter arrived this weekend so haven't got any thinking done...my birthday next weekend but I'll look at date v soon after :)
