Stebel Magnum on a GSA

Thanks for that.

I am also thinking about alternative places. On my Triumph Tiger I fitted one under the seat in the area used where the ABS unit could be mounted.

Another view,I've located the horn in the recess for the charcoal canister on USA bikes,I've used an existing fixing and a wiring adaptor from Nippy Norman's, I put a double bend in the mounting strap supplied with the horn to gain enough clearance for the fork leg on full steering lock,it's not especially pretty and I would have preferred the outlet of the horn to face forward but space is limited, doesn't seem to affect the volume too much though ;)

Many thanks all. Finally fitted it.

I used the idea above but used the higher bronze mounting point that N/N uses for his oil bottle.......just had to turn the horn around (compared to the above) so the 'black' part is facing out. About 0.5cm of a gap between the horn and the forks on full lock...just fitted a Touratech hardpart sourced on this site, which helps with the clearance.

Best wishes

Mike

I have an 05 GS and I just mounted mine on the H & B Cylinder head crash bars next to the engine casing. I did have them mounted under were the stock horn was, but they rattled around there.

Where they are now is a better mount and its not very noticeable.

Not a good idea!:anger

All seemed well at first, but this is not a flat surface and the horn soon works loose.:blast

I have now moved it and used the same location as 2 wheel humvee :thumb:bow. Far more secure and (just!) enough space.

Best wishes

I've just done this install today. Thanks to 2 wheel humvee for the information, it looked to be the best place, but it helped having these photos to confirm the install.

In case it helps any one else, here is what I did.

I did not fancy cutting the canbus connector off so decided to use a couple of scotch blocks to tap into the power. These obviously went to the spade connectors that connect to the horn. I took both of the straps and bent them so I could use them doubled up. Initially when I screwed it in place, the threaded section at the rear of the horn fouled the fork as it turned. The solution to that is to cut about 3mm off the the thread, and I also trimmed back a bit of the silver plastic cover (and a small bit of the black under that) you can see this at the top of 2 wheel humvvee's picture between the two connectors. It stops the horn sitting into the canister space nicely and now there is more than enough clearance. It may make a difference if I had put the two bends in slightly different positions, but I am happy with the way I did it.

To make it durable, I used plastic sleave to enclose the wires, finishing with black tape and cable ties to tidy it all up.

The litttle extra is this, because I had not cut the original plug off, I decided to see if the two horns would work together and to my surprise all seems okay. SWMBO says it sounds terrible which suits me, when I blow my horn I am not trying to win friends.

Overall I am very happy, and I can easily unplug either if there is a problem.

Yes it's loud :)

Slightly different way of mounting, but seems to fit well ;)

Still under the right hand side panel, but this time I utilised the back mounting point for the US canister as below

Positioning it here its not touching anything, and to make sure its good and solid a long cable tie around the top canister mounting points and down around the horn...

Its now pretty solid ;)

Decided not to use the canbus extension from NN's, but didn't want to cut off the canbus plug on the standard horn, so exposed a bit of wire on each and piggybacked a supply up to the Magnum :thumb Both horns now sound... bit of a din as was said before- but that is what we want eh?

How to describe this....when I havent a clue what all the parts are called....Mmm..

Right. Sat on bike looking down through the forks - mine is attached to the centre 'bit'.

I've added a few photos to see if you can work it out........bit awkward to explain to be honest. Being a complete numpty regarding mechanics doesnt help.

I had this put on when I replaced the written off GSA last April but have since replaced the horn with a new one as the last one failed. I've re-wired it to as the BMW wiring was, well, shocking to be honest.

Hope that helps. Nippy Normans told me to ensure the horn is facing towards rear slightly and slightly down. The crappy metal strips that are supplied seem to work nicely in bending it into the appropriate orientation.

Its worked fine for the last 2weeks and 1000 miles, high speed and bumpy country lanes.:beerjug:

Those crappy metal strips supplied with the horn ? I can confirm they're crappy. They sheared off and
Y horn smashed itself to pieces whilst on the M5.

I now need the 'lead' that plugs into the original horn (given up on steibel as this was my third). BMW have them for £7.95 +vat but they're out of stock in AG at moment.
Any alternative suppliers anyone know off.....and cheaper. !

Just installed my Steibel Magnum on my 2010 GS. It took a bit of fiddling. There is no way you can get the original horn screw without taking the gas tank off which I wasn't going to do. I didn't feel like paying £20 for a canbus plug. I found the best place was to remove the brake line holder and install the strip and bending it 90 degrees and then mount the horn. If you cut the original plastic tie you (making sure you put a replacement on before cutting) you can get some more slack from the horn cable. Doing it this way avoids the clearance issues with the front suspension. Seems to work fine and boy is it loud. Can't wait to try it in traffic. If anyone needs a photo I can send one but it is not a straight forward fit.

+1:thumb2 Thats exactly how I fitted mine and it works a treat. Much better than the OE butterfly fart horn. :clap
