so anyone got an airbag vest or jacket, if so any real world accident testing! interested to know what anyone thinks

ive got and use an airbag over vest. not tested it yet and hopefully wont have to.

I've been wearing a HitAir air bag vest for about three years. Unlike the Spidi Neck, it protects protects all of the upper body.

Not been used in anger (and like Dancanovas, I hope I never need to) but a biking paramedic told me that it must have been designed by someone with considerable medical knowledge.

I still wear my armoured jacket and trousers.

Hi,

Me and Mrs Monty both have hi viz HitAir vests. Not had cause to test them, fortunately, but I have worn a demo unit at Sportouring and Mike insisted on testing it on me. It inflates super fast and felt REALLY snug, and the protection around the neck and the small of the back felt really impressive. The air is gradually released over 20 seconds or so.

After that demo I knew we had to have them, as I felt that in the right circumstances it could reduce injury or save life. I wanted to give myself (and especially Mrs Monty) as much protection as possible. After you have worn them a while they become second nature.

Regards,

Matt

Bit of a fag remembering to take the connection off when you stop for petrol, thankfully they seem to need a goodly pull to activate.

Mine's a Hitair one as well, a lot more comfortable than a back protector.

I hope never to need it.

I would have set one off twice this year already :blast
How much are they to re-set/bag or whatever? :nenau

Replacement has cartridges are about £15, and I carry 2 with me under the seat of the bike in case of a minor spill on holiday with Mrs Monty. Just like replacing the cartridge in a life jacket, but these ones are larger to enable quicker inflation before you hit the ground.

I have got off the bike a few times and forgotten to disconnect, but not set it off by mistake yet. I can see it happening one day, though, much to the amusement of whoever witnesses it. :D

If you're intention is to purchase a HitAir vest or jacket, check that the garment you wish to buy has the latest "high speed keybox" fitted. This inflates the jacket in HALF the time of the old style keybox (approx 0.25 secs versus 0.5 secs). The "keybox" is the plastic part into which the "keyball" locates (the lanyard attaches to the keyball). The high speed versions of the keybox are coloured grey, the older (lower speed inflation) models are black.
When I purchased my HitAir vest a couple of years ago, I found that many jackets being sold containing Hit Air bags still had the older keybox fitted. A quarter of a second in a vehicle accident could just be an eternity!

Is it OK to bin a back protector? I didn't know they were that good

Can they be worn under "normal" jackets...or are they worn on the outside?

Where can I find a stockist ?

Im interested!

They need to be worn on the outside, they expand a lot when triggered.

I think so, I find back protectors uncomfortable, or at least the decent ones are because of their size, but the videos and diagrams of the larger pro version hit air jacket shows it provides a lot more protection.

Is the horsey one the same as a bike model - surely the bike one should be more macho in some way?
Odd that they seem to hardly be marketed at bike riders at all this site hardly mentions it.

Hi,

The horsey ones work in a similar way but are lighter duty construction. Would likely be shredded in a fairly small spill from your bike.

I agree that if marketed better toward bikers they would sell quite a lot.

These must be one of the most sensible accessories for motorcycling. I haven't met anyone wearing one........yet.

There don't seem to be many about, that's for sure. I expected a lot of piss taking from other riders, but mainly curiosity and sensible questions.

I don't even think about it any more, it is just as much part off my kit as my lid.

Matt :)

interesting responses, thanks to all, I have took the plunge and got a hit air, sure enough the key box is grey too!

at nearly £400 it aint cheap but I was going to spend almost half that on a proper back protector, and you can reset them yourselves if not too damaged (unlike the electronic ones)

I guess they will get cheaper and more common, I get the impression not a lot of riders know about them?

Swiss m8 of mine had a bad crash a few years back, bad enough to lose a leg from the knee down, he said the air jacket he was wearing saved him some very serious trouble on the upper half of his body.
