We are doing the RDGA in early June (or at least the bits that are not shut) and one of the lads wants to ride the GP circuit in Monaco whilst we are down there.

Has anyone done it, does it go the same way round and is it worth it. Looks like a total ball-ache to me.

Fanks.

Yes, you can drive or ride around pretty much the entire circuit.

It's pretty good to walk around too.

Walked it at 3am during the Monaco Classic a few years ago. Even "with ale" it was incredible to experience how tight the circuit is and how difficult it must be to drive a F1 car around at full chat.

Yep agreed, walked round it a few years ago (sober ;)) and was amazed at just how narrow it is, which you don't really appreciate from the TV coverage.
Not sure I'd want to ride a motorbike round it in rush hour traffic though :eek

We will be there at 11:30 on a Saturday. Trouble do you think?

Yes, the seriously gorgeous ladies strutting about on the pavement are very likely to distract you ;) :D

I'm sure you'll have a fabulous time. I'm hoping to do RDGA myself in July so do post up your pics and trip report :thumb

Got round it all last summer. :thumb2. You can't stop anywhere to take pics, but I managed a few.

Monaco is very disappointing IMO, congested, difficult to find a parking space even on a bike and apart from the draw for F1 fans it has nothing to offer IMO, much better off with an extra day in the mountains or on the beach.

Send your mate off to Monaco and either go for a ride elsewhere or chill out on the beach at Menton for the day :thumb2

Yep, my moneys with the PITA. That being said last year we did RDGA and one of our number(4) was desperate to go to Monaco so we did, we were really really lucky on our timing; it was about 2 weeks before the F1 crews came in. The whole circuit had the armco barriers up and gave a real sense of atmosphere, whoever said its narrow you bet it is even more so with the optical illusion effect. Monaco itself no space, too many cars, too much traffic, no space, nowhere to stop and shit roads. However one thing which I thought was cool was the tunnel system under the city to escape by, literally the main roads sign post out via a tunnel labyrinth.

Would I go again yes if it meant i could do the RDGA and RN but otherwise nope.

It's all very well people saying how good/shit somewhere is. But surely the point of going on these trips is to find out for yourself ? Sometimes going somewhere with low expectations can turn out to be much different. It is what you make it, in many respects.

Monaco is great!

We got there, had to strip of our bike gear on the side of the road as we were both sweltering in the stationary traffic. Finally got to the start/finish line and stopped for a drink and an ice cream. 18 euros later (2 cokes and a calipo lolly) we decided that maybe only the rich and famous are welcome.

the ride down from the col de bonnette into Nice was fantabulous though :thumb2

I was in Monaco in 2004, rode through the tunnel and was glad I did. I was doing 40 kph through the tunnel, the F1 cars go through at 290 !!! I would go again. I wouldn't dismiss it until I had been there myself.

I had a cafe in the Cafe de Paris at Casino Square - cost me less than a cafe on the slopes of Courcheval.

If you don't want that, the beach at Nice is nice.

:thumb

Rode it many moons ago on a GS750 with a leaky fork seal pissing oil over a brake calliper.....not to be repeated!!!!

I've driven the track in a Porsche GT3 on the closed track :) It's tight. Previously drove the various parts of it with family in the family car as it's what you do. Go do it!

Davy F.

I completely agree but free advise is worth just that. Its like the Stelvio no one really recommends it but everyone will do it and tick it off their own list. Thats why we book/plan as little as possible apart from a few places to see then you make your own decisions that you can compare later.
