When and where did it happen? Late July 2007 (1 week after the warranty expired - BMW covered parts & labour) en route to a meeting in Cork (near Milstreet)
rider name? Gerry C
bike details (model and year)? 2005 1200 GS

Bike registered January 2004. R1200GS

On way home April 2006 pump contol failed, bike just died half way up hill to house. Nearly killed me pushing it up the hill to get it home

Also fuel pipe fell Off in Germany June July 2005. Actually failed whilst over taking traffic. Nearly killed myself as not able to pull back in behind lorry as car had pulled up and had to cross oncoming main traffic to other side of road. BMW put it down to me having been riding on bumpy roads in the Alps for a week. I put it down to it not being correctly connected after service.

My brothers 2004 R1200GS pump control failed in France 2006, doing 70 mph in outside lane of auto route. We where delayed by a day waiting for BMW engineer to travel to us to repair, took 15 mins to repair. He admitted they had a team of drivers running around repairing these all over Euro Land.

C'mon Tim, where are we going with this ?

Are you planning a class action against BMUU?

Are you compiling a database of faults that can be referred to by anyone planning their own action or claim?

Do you have any statistical analysis yet? Paul should be able to how many of the members have registered as owning 1200's; with that information one could make a stab at a failure rate, among the UKGSer population at least....

Not criticising, just like to know whether there is an expected outcome or are we just listing our woes?

I was in the Pyrenees last week and shall be in Belgium until 12 August.

It's been going on for four years so a week is neither here nor there, and I want to make sure I handle it correctly now that we are over the 150 failures mark.

Tim

This information is not to be taken as a forecast of future earnings.

I wouldn't try and calcualte a failure rate; it will only be wrong because of the nature of the population and the sample. It is quite sufficient to demonstrate there are a significant number of failures.

There are really only 2 (regular) issues that bring a 1200 to a halt - the antenna and the fuel pump controller. It looks as if BM have cracked the antenna issue so it would be good if the same could be done for the fuel pump.

Added to 2008 Roll of Honour. Hmm two on the same day

- When and where did it happen? 6th August 08, luckily 100 meters from home after a 200+ mile journey
- rider name: BarmyFred
- bike details (model and year): R1200GS, 07
- remedy: BMW assist arranged to take me to Balderstons, Peterborough. New controller fitted while I waited
- How many days work/holiday did you lose?: 1/2 a day.
- Were there any incidental costs?: Bought some new gloves while I waited and booked a test ride of a K1200R Sport...

Added to 'Roll of Honour'

When and where did it happen? 18:20 August 06 2008 - Manchester. 2 mins after a cold start, Low fuel Warning had just come on
- Owner/name : Kev Gascoigne
- bike details (model and year) 56 plate 1200GS Adventure 5700 mls
- remedy, fuel pump controller replaced at Williams BMW as part of warranty was in stock
- How many days work/holiday did you lose? None
- Were there any incidental costs? Just my sweat pushing it home.

Williams said the FPC was corroded, and made in Italy!?

FPC failure

Added to 2008 list

Bike - R1200GS 2004
Mileage - 14,000 miles
Location - Colchester, Essex
Lost time - Hours and hours of self diagnosis. Self recovered using own trailer. Bike inoperable for several weeks
Cost - price of GS911 + 2M of cable + terminals
When - May 2008
Solution - bypassed controller using wiring direct from battery with make/break connection on handlebars and shorting wire on keyring

I bought a GS911 after the failure and before I discovered the cause of the problem. Needless to say the 911 did not indentify the FPC as the cause but it did eliminate all the other likely causes and does all it claims very well. I would not have spent the £250+ had the controller not failed. I have no intention of replacing the controller since the rewire solution works fine although I'm left wondering whether the pump is now being overstressed.

Thanks for your efforts with this
