Having recently bought a 1200GS I started a thread on here asking where people had got their Autocoms mounted, as I was struggling to find space.
Couple of people said they'd stuck theirs on the bracket for the user manual.
Seemed like a good idea, so I did the same. First time out I ran into some heavy rain.

No doubt you've guessed what's coming next!

Yes, the autocom started crackling, and then stopped working altogether.
When I got home, and removed it from the bike, I tipped a fairly large amount of water out of it. Clearly this part of the bike is not protected from rainwater ingress. Stupid me. Can't imagine the book would last long if you put it there.

I now have the autocom on a radiator, in the probably forlorn hope that it may come back to life when it dries out. Unfortunately, I think this could turn out to be an expensive mistake.

BE WARNED:(:blast.

mmmm. My dealer fitted mine to the the bracket where the manual fits. A year or so later, it's generally playing up so I took a ride up to Autocom with mrs Berin to ask them to check it out. Top blokes, because the checked it, found it was fecked due to water ingress, replaced it foc and re-fitted it to my bike, plus checked over mrs berins install in the f800gs, installed the headsets in the helmets properly, added a bgns to the one I'd pillaged off an earlier kit and tested it all for about £30 worth of cables.

Customer service second to none, plus they said they told the dealers not to fit the unit there as they fill up with water and break:mmmm

Autocom fitted mine under the seat where the tool kit goes. I fitted a tool tube to carry tools.

I have mine where the manual sits but, like the manual, I took the precaution of enclosing it in a plastic bag...

mine was on the manual support for two years and went through loads of very heavy rain and neve skipped a beat :nenau

Ive covered the 1200GS fittings many time on here, the only place we recommend for the main control unit to be fitted is in the tool tray area. I or we have never had a bike brought back to us with a fualty system due to water and we get a lot being brought in where they have fitted the systems onto the manual holder area and they have all been scrap.

For a system designed to fit on a motorcycle wouldn't it be better if the unit was waterproof then it could be mounted anywhere within reason!

I cant see any postion on the bike is guarenteed to be dry so I dont know how you would stand with warrentee if the unit breaks due to water!

used Autocom now for about 8 years?
various kits - (due to upgrade - never had one break down.)
tank bag / onboard / "holster" bag - all have got absolutely soaked.
open face lid and mic are the worst :blast.

all i've ever done to cure them is dry them naturally / not on a radiator.

Good Kit. :thumb2
Good Service too - every problem i ever had was proven (eventually) to be....
um,...."user error" :o

:D

By all means our systems could be made fully waterproof but with the extra costs for machines/build up and parts the overall cost of our systems would cost 2-3times the original amount. Which for you guys would make our systems retail for around £400-600 which is a fortune and some people say we are expensive already. Believe me we have looked into fully waterproof systems but the costs are shocking.

Putting a plastic bag around the unit isn't expensive and will still let the unit "breathe".

I agree with this a lot but it doesnt look the tidiest of solutions and the GS's tend to be the only bikes that cause problems with water so we feel its not really worth supplying a bag with each kit as not all bikes need them.

Trade in your 1200 for a 1150, my autocom is always dry as a bone. :) :hide

Although sometime my pillion's plug makes a SEVERE crackle but that part is exposed.

So Rich where do you recommend fitting your unit:augie

I didn't think you'd want to supply a plastic bag, but if there was a goretex type one that you could, it would solve the issue fairly easily for you, ie no complaints / warranty jobs and the owner would be happy too :)

As an example, I put my MP3 player in a bag designed for the seaside so it keeps dry whatever the weather. The music out is via a sealed socket so no water gets in that way. Just an idea :o

Then why do they fail in this position if it's not through water ingress?
