I'm thinking aboot gettin' a kilt. Just thinkin' aboot it mind you...:augie I've lived here for 51 years and my Maw's Scottish (so's my sister) so I feel that I'm entitled to withoot feelin' like Californian celt at a Comin' Home event.

I've hired kilts several times and quite like wearing one. They're now about £75 to hire the full monty and I reckon that several hires would pay for one of your own. My mate's son just bought a full set of kilt clobber for just under £800. Initially, I'd just be looking to buy a kilt and sporran and then maybe later add stuff for formal do's like weddings etc.

What I'd like to know is what's the difference in a 5 yard kilt (the likes of Slater's Menswear do them) and an 8 yard kilt (apart from 3 yards)? Is there much visible difference? I realise the weight in the 8 yard will be heavier (dunno by how much though). I know you can get manmade fibre kilts that look good and are much cheaper but I'd want a "real" one IYKWIM.

If I bought the cheaper 5 yard kilt, would I later wish I'd bought the 8 yard?

My weight can fluctuate between FB and VFB sizes. How much "play" in size does a kilt have before it's too big or too wee for you?

I saw a lovely tartan the other day in Embrie (sort of purple heathery colours) but I forget the name. It wasn't a Clan, it was Spirit of Scotland or something like that and I reckon that's what I would go for as opposed to a Clan or a fitba' team. Dinnae think Man U hae a tartan anyway. My Mum's maiden name Clan tartan is loupin' so I winnae go there...

I won't be throwin' away my Lederhosen: I'm only embrasing my multi cultural background :D

TIA and cue pisstaking I suppose :ronno

IMO the 5 yard kilt doesn’t sit right, well its not really the sittin its more to do with the way that it swirls/ swings. It needs the extra weight for the pleats. Accept nothing less than the full 8 yards.
There isn't that much room for adjustment in a kilt, the 3 buckles have a few holes for adjustment that would give you an extra inch or two but that’s it. Make sure that the one that you buy fits well, don’t let the sales guy bullshit you into wearing it too high, knee on the floor kilt should be level with carpet etc. The boundaries of acceptability have been pushed and stretched over the years just get something that feels right and comfortable for you.
My kilt all in cost about 2K

I just googled SS tartan and got this, its soo you darlin :D

That second tartan looks aboot right :D

£2K? Is that the Bloomberg tartan?

I've just phoned Slaters. Made to measure kilts in 8 yards and 13 oz weight: £320. Is that a good price? I get discount there so I'd get it for less than £300.

Ive probably taken 25 years to put it all together.
Kilt £800
Charlie Jacket and waistcoat £600
Dress sporan £180
Day sparran £120
Day Jacket £200
Then Shoes, Sgian Dubh, kilt pin, socks makes it 2k :nenau
My mum made me get the day stuff a couple of years ago when I was attending a black tie thingie :ymca

Slaters price sounds really good, not sure about the weight of the cloth though.

This might be a help regarding cloth weight:thumb2:thumb2

Is that that Dress Weegie tartan? Looks a bit washed oot in that fotie, Rab.

Did you ever get a kilt? I ken you donated one tae Guenter Fuhr but wur you no' gettin' ane made tae measure?

8 yard kilt is a complete myth, the ammount of material in the kilt will depend on the exact tartan, if it is pleated to the stripe or the sett, box or military box pleated double box pleated your waist size. An 8 yard kilt will vary from 6 to 9 yard depending on the above.

If you look hard you can find a good kilt maker to do you one for under 250. Dont forget that the big companies and names will actualy outsourse work to kiltmakers very often home workers. so your £800 kilts is actualy made for a lot less to the maker, if you go to the maker direct you can get a much better deal.

The full 9 yards?

I always thought it was 9 yards. Hence the expression?

As to tartan, the modern stuff all dates from 19th C Victorian tosh so I'd not worry to much about that. All the major fitba teams have their own tartan even. Go for any tartan you like the look of.

.

There's no clear indicatioon of the exact source of this expression.

Kilt length is one common variation, with others being firing the full belt of ammo off a machine gun, the cubic capacity of a cement mixer and even an Admirals obscure reference to the output of the 9 Liberty Ship builders yards in America.:rob

I thought it was American Football?

You should get yourself to 21st Century Kilts. I got Howie to make me a Kilt (Ladies so less that 8 yards and a bit shorter)last year which since i'm not Scottish is Charcoal grey with a red pinstripe. My sporran is red and green suede from Sporran nation. Fab-Tastic. Highly recommend both places especially if you want something just a wee bit different.

You can get a decent sporan, for £15, I have a handmade carved leather day sporran for £25, PC and waistcoat from ex hire companies under £60 ex military brogues for dress shoes off ebay £10. It does not need to cost a fortune.

Its much the same as GS's there are those who shop around and get the deals as and where they can and those that just buy the TT and Wunderlich catalogue.

Oh and riding in a kilt to a wedding even in the summer is "damn" cold !!

You pays yir money and you makes your choice. :D
I’ve got no problem paying a premium price for a premium product.
My previous kilt lasted about 20 years. I’ve still got it, its just a tad tight now. :augie It was made by a woman in the village and subsequently didn’t cost much. Most of the kilts I had before this were supplied to me, so didn’t cost me a penny.
Had to pay a licence on the current kilt because of the tartan, it was the tartan that I wanted and was happy to pay the price.
FFS the wool for my socks was £30, then they had to be made by hand, for me, its worth it :D

Cant argue with that at all, that’s me that is. :D
Anyway, its pishin down, think Ill take a bimble to the sneckapolatus for some breakfast. It’s the same with all my bike gear, its not cheep, but it does the job its designed to do. :thumb2
