Strange problem today!!!

I was riding today and the brake failure light came on, with the red warning triangle....and the speedo stopped working... I am almost positive that i could NOT hear the servo whistling at that time; and the back brake felt completely useless, but the front felt fine.
I rode for a few miles, then stopped, switched off, switched on again and it was OK....any ideas??

had the same problem on an 06 gsa less the speedo failure at xmas. for a couple of days the brake fail light would come on and after riding for a few miles would clear itself. then it failed and wouldnt clear. it turned out to be a broken wire in the loom. BMW garage bypassed the broken wire and hey presto, all working fine again

That sounds like an issue with the rear wheel sensor. The signal provides both speed information and ABS data; if it has a fault the symptoms you have described will occur.

The sensor is located in the final drive unit. I believe that it senses the gear teeth inside the drive to generate the pulses :nenau

There are a few possible causes:
A break in the wiring.
A fault in the sensor.
The sensor (being magnetic) is covered covered in swarf from the final drive components as they wear. It may indicate a final drive fault; it may not ...

Thanks guys. It is in for a service on Tues, and still under warranty; hopefully they can find the problem. At least now I can steer them in the right direction!! I assume when they change the FD oil they would be able to see a 'potential' fault?

This used to happen regularly on my old 1200 during the cold weather (2+ or below).

According to BMW assist, it's due to a low battery. The bike shuts down everything it considers unnecessary to get the bike started. A replacement battery removed the problem.

I did Jim. On a 2005 12GS (in the faster yellow :augie

).

It was final drive on the way out and it was replaced under warranty. Others report different outcomes however so don't get too depressed. :comfort

I had exactly the same problem on my '06, after hearing all the horror stories of burning looms and final drives imploding it turned out to just need a new battery, if your doing lots of short runs or lots of town riding when the servo gets a lot of use the battery voltage can drop enough to give exactly the symptoms you describe. Give the bike a decent run or if you can leave it on an optimate over night :thumb2

Thanks guys..
Apparently there has been a customer service bulletin/update where they advise cutting/bypassing one of the wires...(as manxman had said)
So, all sorted now; mechanic said, there was no unusual amount of swarf in the FD..

Well, I had the same problem exactly.
BMW service were in trouble to know what was wrong and decided at last it was power shortage. A new battery solved it. Still no one seems to know why the ododmeter stops too.
Now and then the problem shows again, but I think it is always when the battery is not full charge.
So it is still a mistery, but the solution seems to be a full charge battery
