Brian,
First the 60csx is basically a dumb unit, as in it will show a dot on the screen of where you are, all that will change s what map this dot will sit on IE TOPO, Road, marine
You may also need a microSD card to store the maps on this can be found under the battreys at the rear of the unit as a guide the whole of Europe road mapping will fit on a 2gig card.
you'll need mapsource which I believe can be downloaded from Garmin site
this program will control the maps you put on to the 60csx, IE TOPO or road maps it will also let you create routes, tracks and waypoints amongst other things,
As for maps these are a seperate item and you can go for a few varietys
TOPO which is Garmins OS type maps as long as you go for the TOPO version 2 maps there okay but no where as detailed as gold old fashioned OS maps
For the road there is routable and non routable versions
routable will give you turn by turn directoin and if you deviate off the route it will recalculate a new route to get you back on track
non-routable will show the direction to take on the map but won't do the turn by turn, the caveat to this is, there's a small program that will turn non-routable mapping into routable mapping, can't remember whats it's called off the top of my head but if you do a search it should pop upas it's been mentioned before.
cost ? you can buy the mapping or find it via various torrents
in use you need to use a GPS to get used to it especially if your used to paper maps a GPS unit works a bit different so force's you to work to it rather than the other way about, but stick with it as the 60csx is a cracking wee unit.
For walkng set your waypoints and use it to keep on track
For bike/car set it up to show the next turn screen, as this will show you how many miles/time to go till next turn, I find this easier when usig the unit on the bike
