Whilst I test rode a sohc GS a couple of times, this is the first GS I've owned and can't give you a back to back comparison with the 'older' motor . I spend all day riding a '58 RT though.

From memory from my test rides and comparing it with the RT, the biggest difference you'll notice is its smoothness. There's very little lumpiness at the bottom of the revs and pick up is smooth and pretty progressive.

I remember years ago putting a dyno jet on my carbureted VFR and was astonished at the difference. It wasn't the top end, or a huge hoik in power that surprised me, it was the way it breathed and picked up off a shut throttle. As if the old VFR had been asthmatic all its life.

And so i guess the same is true here. No massive obvious power gains and huge midrange rush compared to what I remember from my testrides, but a crisper and cleaner power delivery, definitely a non smoker now!!

Having come from a sports bike background, it doesn't exactly set the seat of yer pants alight, but for a spirited ride on a twisty A road, I love its midrange and instant grunt. Short shift it 3rd - 4th - 5th, no clutch, onto the throttle stop every time and its fun fun fun!.

I really hummed and harred before taking the plunge, but I love it. 30 - 90 on a back road and it'll keep with most things. Nice bike, nice motor. :thumb

It’s mega. Really. Much more enjoyable engine, with sharper throttle response in low rpm, more ooomph in the midrange and free reving right up to the limiter. The sound helps, too.

If I hadn’t some annoying expenses planned for this year (wedding etc.) I would upgrade from my 2006 GS right away.

6400miles since February including 4300 on the April Dash to Morocco. It has been faultless in every respect and has freed up significantly. Last Sun/Mon I took off and rode 550miles to Wales and back and today I rode 360 up to Les Wassall and back to have my lights HID'ed by him. Just keep her in sixth and its twist and go.

I've added a Sargent low seat and to me she is the complete bike. The only change I would make from new is to ditch the Bridgestone Battlewings tyres which I find totally uninspring and poor in the wet.

Having notched up 22,000 miles on an 07 GSA which was a great bike, the 2010 model is epic.

I test rode a 2010 model GS yesterday and it was absolutely brilliant. Unfortunately it is the first GS I've been on so I have nothing to compare it too.

I can't afford to buy a new one so I'm trading in my 2009 Fireblade for a 2006 GS.

Am I going to be disapointed in the 2006 model?

Have just over 2,000 on my 2010 now.

Compared to my old 05 1200, there is significantly more torque at lower revs - smoothing running without lumpiness at low speed - don't need all that clutch slipping to smooth things out when trickling along in traffic - will trickle along on a closed throttle with right hand off the bar - greater accelleration - seems less stressed and less vibey when exploring the higher rev range.

Gearbox sweeter than the 05 too.

Only down side that I have noticed was the tendency to 'fart and not pick instantly when rapidly blipping the throttle on down changes to 3rd and 2nd - but this appears to be improving as the miles are added and is no longer an issue.

Over all a big improvement on the 05 model - lovely!

Not at all. :thumb2

Have just got back from Prague on a 2300 mile tour and my 06 GSA was brilliant.
That includes motorways, nice A roads and twisty mountain passes. My bike has Remus headers and Akra can and picks up sweetly from low revs.

Haven't tried the new twin cam engined bike yet but am sure the difference isn't that great. :)

You wont be disppointed with a 2006 GS but it really wont feel as sharp as the new one - if there is anyway you can stretch to a new one then do!!!

The 2006 model would virtually be a straight swap for my 2009 Fireblade.

However the dealer came up with some fantastic deals for going into a brand new GS. One deal I especially like was:

- Brand new BMW R1200 GS with Comfort pack, panniers and topbox
- Deposit would be my 2009 Fireblade
- The dealer would then give me £3133 cashback.
- 24 monthly payments of £150 (which most of the cashback pays)

After 24 months a final payment of £5000 would be due or I would trade in for a new one and start a new finance deal.

I should really bite the salesman's hand off for this deal, but my Fireblade is fully paid off and I don't really want to go into a new finance deal just now.

At least if I go with the 2006 model just now I own it outright and can look to getting into a new model next year or the year after.

I suggest you do. It's a lot better. :thumb

The 2007 model year got rid of the servos and the 2008 model year got the good gearbox. :thumb2

Got my first R1200GS on march 1st new and love it, I looked at used but not many nice ones out there, I wasted a day going to look at a pile of shit at bristol motorrad (2007 fsh 3000 miles one owner show room condition) I then went to riders of Cardiff delt with a guy called russel and bought a new one happy days, go for it and get a new one think of the waranty trouble free riding.:thumb2:thumb2:beerjug:

Wen't for a second hand GS was gonna keep my Busa, came out with new 2010 GSA wife thought I was feckin mad and would regret it, 3500 miles later its :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Best regards Stretch :)

2010 model has been my first GS. 2000 miles and great after intial problem with cam sensor. I love this bike. Teaching missus to ride involving a lot of trickling along country lanes and it is really smooth for this - makes you feel like a police rider. Mpg can go to 65 +. I compared the 2010 with a 2008 with 16k and it was just so much smoother and responsive. the dealer said once you've tried a 2010 its all you will want and he was right ( smart sales )

Like engineer I am a little disappointed with the farty pickup when blipping the throttle and wonder if this is to do with the operation of he exup valve.
but you live with it and it doesn't affect your riding enjoyment significantly.

have fitted the GSA screen and in process of fitting winglets. suprising that that such a famous long distance bike is below par in this respect.

overall it kicks ass and the more I read reviews of the multistrada with its weaving steering and rubbish useabilty below 30 mph the happier I feel with my choice.

Love my GSA except for one thing....

those bloody O/E tyres in the wet (Bridgestones)

Mike

Damn you guys! I was pretty much set on trading in my Fireblade for an 2006 GS. I've now spent the last hour or so working out if I can afford a brand new one instead.

Affordability... check
Justification to the missus... work in progress!

I also had a '05, and while it's a great bike, the servo brakes bothered me. One ride on the 2010 and I found the extra torque intriguing, the new sound enticing, and the gearbox sealed the deal. It's everything I wanted the '05 to be.

Only 1200 miles on the new bike so far, but am taking a 2k trip next week. I stripped the '05 and took, among other things, Jesse bags, Fastway pegs, Sargent seat, Touratech tankbag and some bits a pieces. The new addition is a Givi AF330 with winglets and Tobinators which I'm still experimenting with.

My advise is not to ride a '10 unless you're ready to buy!

Cheers,
~WW~

If you go for the 2006 you will pine for the 2010 very quickly.

I brought a new 08GS when i really wanted a GSA, within 11 months ( when funds permitted) i upgraded to an 09GSA and no looking back.

The only thing i would say is that i had an 2010GS last month while my 09GSA with Remus headers and can was being serviced and would i swap.....no way. No better in my opinion, slightly smoother yes, but more torque, no.

Cant compare it to a 2006 model tho

Just my opinion :thumb2

On my third GS in a few years and this new one is the best one so far IMHO. Seems to have a bit more character, very easy and smooth around town, just a little bit better all round than before.:thumb

Go for the one you really want... much cheaper in the long run! :augie
