My bikes engine is dead; it died on a steady ride home. 200 miles short of 50,000miles and two days shy of a booked in service. Few weeks ago actually, I have been in shock for awhile. Or is it not wanting to have people making rye/wry smiles. :augie

BMW have offered me 50% off a new engine. What are my options?? This catastrophic failure might be due to my hedge incident so insurance claim??

I am going to resign from my job as its a 50miles round commute. Having a bmw-hire bike costing me £100 per week is killing my low pay.

Sank a load of saving's into the bike, still love it. But I think its over, I cannot even seem to muster (a man's man cry) tears.

Northampton bmw have said they have never seen a engine destroyed on one side yet the other side is in very good nick for 50k.

I will be getting images (if engine is still in uk) this weekend & finding out how much it will cost too get put back on the road.

I will get the engineers report at the weekend and what they reckon went wrong, plus full run down on the damage. :hack

ps: Waiting on Leicester police to prosecute me for doing 38/30 zone. Received the NIP a few weeks ago, filled in and returned. I was lulled into doing 40 by a van, who did a huge braking maneuver. I just thought he was pulling into a drive, next thing I get flashed..I might take it to court and defend myself!?! Accepting the punishment straight away though pointing out I was simply following another vehicle assuming he knew the limit. In my mind he lulled me into going @40. I stared into this white-van, like "wtf are you doing, dude. It's remembrance sunday!" then got flashed...

Nice of BMW offering you 50%, perhaps it may not be too expensive with the discount. Sounds like something blocked oil/water to that side - who's liability.
(if it's been serviced previously by the dealer, then you may be able to push for more than the 50%)

Maybe it was the end of your bikes' world rather than ours you forecast 12 months ago

Sorry to hear about the destruction, I have heard of four cylinder slant K engines losing the oil supply to one cylinder due to swarf blocking oilways, a mates was recalled to have a new clutch to prevent this, any such recalls on the 800s ?

And what stunning quote did they give you?

Was there any warning?oil light, a rattle even or just bang?

Maybe look around for a second hand engine from a breaker.What a bummer,

Why not just swallow the pill, you were speeding after all? Save a whole bunch of stress trying to blame someone else for your own lack of care and attention...

As for the bike, I'm gutted for you! Guess you'll have to wait and see what the price comes in at for a rebuild. Have to admit I think I'd be speaking with solicitors, as engines should not simply die.

Until you know what caused it and the likely repair cost there's not much you can do...

Rather than resign you job, can you not afford to buy a 125 with an MOT and commute on that? It's pretty tough finding work right now...

Yikes maybe the colour of your bike killed it :O

To be honest 50k thats a lot for a bike im slightly impressed its lasted that long, shame though as everything with BMW isnt cheap and i dread to think how much the engine is.

Try for the speed awareness course, I was done for 36 in a 30 and did this course. Saved the 3 points.

What sort of service history does the bike have - dealer?

50k isn't a lot for a bike, especially as "it isn't cheap".

A modern, engine that is serviced correctly should last forever.

Full details too follow; as so many parts failed, they were amazed it actually ran, though if you make 120db steady 'bob bob bob' sounds you sort of paint the picture. I have let myself down as I didn't take a video or images when I had the opportunity of both, the engine stripped down. Mangled and melted bits & bob's.

I am a biker for life! Just dunno when I will be able to save up for sorting this out (bike will be trailered home & hidden from immediate view, for the short-term). So cycling and working at local picking'&'packing jobs are looking interesting now.

I get the 12months now; I'll be all around if not only in spirit for those doom-mongers out there!

That's terrible Paddy, I do know what your going through though (look at the Snow run thread 56k miles '03'). Well out of warranty though but believe it was a failed oil pump (big ends) 1150. Mines gone to Scrimingers for a rebuild

Hopefully you will be offered a Speed awareness Course, if you are hen take it. I've been on one today, I've also done my IAM a few years ago but still managed to find a few bits interesting

Don't bother contesting the speeding - you'll make a small fine into a huge one. Trust me, as a Traffic Cop, take a course or a fine if offered. You'll not get off for the reason you've stated.

Gutted about the engine. Take it to a pro, get the engine stripped and video the process. Recover the bit of shite that has blocked an oil gallery or whatever and get the BMW garage to write a report attributing the blockage to a bit of debris knocked loose during your collision. Take said report to your insurance company and they may cover the new engine.

......And don't quit your job for want of transport. Buy a shitter bike and commute on that, then sell it in the summer for what you paid for it.

I stopped the guy from telling me. I said "I do not wish to hear the figure over the phone"; explained this has destroyed my current out-look & had forced my hand with regard to distance work!

I agree with you & Mr K, I know speeding is dangerous & keep that too the back-lanes. Away from towns/villages & civilization. I get cut up enough near motorway junctions as a 7.5t-lorry driver. Every passing motorway junction is a check the mirrors for local car positions whilst on the bike, so to speak :augie

Thanks, I was hoping for atleast 150,000 miles! Their is an american chap on adv-site who has done 250k & its still going strong. :rob

Are you shitting me?

I have an FJ1100 with 96,000 miles on that was made in 1985! I would expect ALL modern engines to do 100,000 without problems - providing the servicing has been carried out.

I have a BMW car with 238,000 miles on it too... Maybe I'm just mechanically sympathetic. :nenau
