pannier key coding

I know you can code the plastic system panniers but not the system top box as that has the key from the old Ks (the one with the hinge). The top box key does look different, so thats annoying but I can see why it doesn't work.

Now I've got a new style aluminium top box, the key looks the same - I was hoping to take the lock barrels out of the system panniers to use on my new box. But I can see how the get the barrel out (of the ally one, I can do it on the plastic system) and anyway the barrel looks short even though the key doesn't.

So can the ally panniers/top box be coded and can I use the barrels I have?

And since they can be coded if you order the locks from BMW that way, is there a source for cylinder lock "wafers" themselves.

Also, according to that article, there are only 3 different "wafers", yet key codes contain digits from 1 to 5. I would have expected 5 different "wafers".

wafer changing

this is realy useful, thank you - so even though the barrels are different I can swap the wafers.

I removed the barrels from my old system panniers, I have the wafers.........

Do you (or does anyone) know where the access hole is to get the barrel out of the new style ally panniers/top box?

If your dealers any good, he should be able to help you out, or one of the mechanics (they normally have "spares"). If he's not, he'll say "you can't get them singly and will have to buy a complete lock"

To remove the barrel from the Vario top box.

1. open lid
2. remove 3 philips head screws from lid lock mechanism
3. this will allow you to remove the complete lid lock mechanism.
4. insert key into barrel and turn. (Lock)
5. remove the orange plastic locking cam
6. you can now see the small shiny metal clip which must be pressed towards the centre of the barrel to allow the barrel to be withdrawn from its socket.

Hope this helps.

Im in the same boat, Can I buy a new barrel the same as the system pannier ones and retrofit into the (Old style lack plastic system) BMW top box so I can have just one key.. not two (even with a pannier recode) ???

Toaster, if I understand you correctly, you want to change the lock in an older case to the newer 1200 style lock?

If that’s what you want to do and you can remove the old lock barrel then I’m pretty sure it can be done. I’ve checked old and new lock barrels side by side, and they are as close as makes no difference.

But one thing I can tell you, 1200 style wafers will not fit happily in an 1100/1150 lock barrel, the 1200 wafers are very slightly wider and tend to stick down, so I would recommend a complete 1200 lock barrel and wafers. As a kit its 'Lock rep kit' part No: 51 25 7 698 204)

I would recommend you read both these pages to familiarise your self with the locks.
Re-keying 1100/1150 locks http://www.ebbo.org/key.php
Re-keying 1200 locks http://www.ebbo.org/re_keying.php

If you do decide to give it a go, let us know how it works out, I'd be very interested :thumb2

If it doesn’t work out, this page will self destruct and I’ll disavow all knowledge :D

Good luck!

Oh , I couldnt wait, did it tonight, Thanks for the info Ebbo. Its an 1100 and Im just trying to get the locks on panniers to match the ignition and also the top box.

Good news is the panniers are now done, except with only one wafer in one barrel and two in another, I think someone has recoded them a few times and as a result I have 4 number "1"'s which are no good and a load of holes...

Also the top box is a completely differnt barrel, much smaller and with a totally diffent key som it looks like I cant recode that one, at least all the wafers are inatlled and correct on that one.

SO, does anyone have any number 2 and numer 3 wafers available.... or put another way, does anyone want any number 1 wafers.. cheers Toaster

PM me your name and address, I'll send you what I have, OK?

When I bought a set of second hand panniers I had no time to get my locks reset. I dismantled the lock and fiddled about until a few of the plungers worked OK. I then ground the others down flush with the barrel.
It may not be as secure as the 8 plunger lock but who can tell I'mIm sure nobody wonders about with a few keys trying pannier locks.
