I picked up my F800GS last week and pre-booked it in for its first service straight away as I knew I would be cracking out some decent mileage over the weekend.

As I was running the bike in, I had to go easy on the speed/revs, but as I headed for Ripon (from Wiltshire) in the Friday evening traffic, I was certainly tested by the weather and congestion. To set the scene, my bike has the BMW side panniers fitted and am currently awaiting the handguards and Akrapovic can.

I was a little hesitant weaving through the traffic at first as I was not sure of my new width with panniers (I am used to an 1150GS which was easy to judge as if the engine would fit through a gap, so would the panniers!!), but once I was used to it, the bike was VERY easy to ride with good pull through all of the gears.

The engine sounds lovely and can imagine when the new can arrives, it will sound like a blunderbuss! It coughed out a couple of splutters and backfires which I am hoping are just the engine 'bedding in'?

Riding back in the early hours of this morning (4am) it was bloody cold (1 degree) and after suffering the boredom of the M1, the A43 was a welcome sight.

In quick summary from over 500 miles in 2 days and all weathers:

- The seat is only good for 1.5 hours before it all becomes physically painful!
- Fuel consumption is EXCELLENT. I was averaging 65mpg.
- The clocks are very clear and the on board computer provides relevant info.
- The standard screen is rubbish at speed.
- The exhaust note is lovely.
- The front brake resevoir is annoying as it wobbles continuously at speed.
- The turning circle is good and the bike is very easily controlled in traffic (once you know your width).
- The BMW panniers are excellent, however with the standard seat height getting on/off is as hard as my 1150!

Hope the above helps/provides some useful pointers for any aspiring 800 owners.

"The front brake resevoir is annoying as it wobbles continuously at speed"

I'm pretty sure someone on here is going to give a perfectly good reason why it needs to be mounted the way it is, but i can't think of one . It is very annoying to say the least.

Because it'll bounce if you hit it with a branch :thumb

Don't forget that the 800 is a more trail-oriented bike than virtually anything produced in the last 15 years over 650cc, and it will have a few quirks because of that.

The standard screen is grand for what it is..... it produces a smooth airflow well beyond legal speed limits..., and the low seat's good for about 5 hours or so :aidan

I take that point Wizard, i was just thinking of the other bikes ive had enduro wise which didn't have a setup like that. I suppose more brake fluid is the difference.

Hi Porthos

Nice write up, from my limited miles (370) I agree with all your comments but have not done enough miles on the seat to test its long distance comfort. But I have an Airhawk so not too worried by that.
I will be interested too see what you make of the Akrapovic. I think it might be too noisey for me.

Put a post on when you get it.

Thanks

I can't quite make up my mind if I prefer the plastic resevoir and seperate MC, or would rather have a low-mounted metal combined unit

I have, however, got a spare resevoir on order :augie

Spoke to an Austrian guy riding a week old F800GS on knobblies around Morocco last week. His english was limited, as is my german. He had a few minor niggles with it ... one of which was having to refuel a lot more frequently than this 35 / 33 litre riding companions on an 1150 and 1200 Adventures, but his main complaint was that on the tarmac, the screen is way too small. He had a bunch of touratech gear on the bike but said the one essential thing (and something he was yet to install) was a larger aftermarket screen for the tarmac. He said anything above 140km/h (85mph) with a peaked helmet was very difficult and made riding tarmac stretches with his 100mph loving buddies a total misery.

At least thats an easy one to fix

800 touring performance

Is there anyone who has experienced touring performance of the new 800? I had only almost a hundred mile on it but it gave me the feeling that it will do it...:thumb

On the other hand I am really happy with its handling, I did not have any problems with manouevrability due to 21" front wheel as discussed in here. Istanbul traffic is really terrible but it is really doing well with its slim type and light feeling. However I am still wondering its on road performance...

800 Touring Performance

I did 3 hours at the weekend on A-Roads / dual carriageways at speeds up to 80mph.
This was 'around' the 5000rpm running-in limit and the bike was superb at these speeds. Little wind buffeting around the head (I'm 5'10) and the engine has bags of torque from as little as 35mph in 6th gear.
Seat could be a little uncomfortable for extended periods as it is somewhat narrow and firm, but an aftermarket touring seat or seat pad should sort this.
The 21" front wheel presented no problems I could see at these speeds - the bike always fely firmly planted and stable with no weaving. (I also had a full pannier/top box set affixed)

If anything, below 70mph feels very pedestrian and a relaxed 350 miles of riding at this speed in a day would seem very possible.
I'll find out next month as I've got 7 of these booked in a week through France :cool

GS twin's seat

What do you guys think if the bike's seat. I finally managed to get on one at my dealer's showroom today and I wasn't impressed. It had the standard seat, felt hard and worse, narrow. I wondering how that's going to feel once we get onto long trips.

I am OK on my 800's (optional low) seat for 3 hours or so, I find it quite comfortable. I think it depends on your own backside as much as anything:)

I have the standard seat on the 800 and at first i found it a pain in the rear after45 mins or so . Now,either my backside or the seat must be breaking in becausei can now do double that before feeling it badly.Hopefullythe process will continue.

I've done a couple of 6 hours days on the bike and never given the seat a second thought.

However, on a 45 minute commute, when putting my left foot down at every stop light I find the shape of the seat encourages the left leg of my boxers to bunch up uncomfortably

I might have to revise my choice of grundies :D

I've never given the seat a second thought, seems fine to me even after my 1150. No complaints from the pillion either.
