Mornin' All,

As I am currently car less (its amazing what a bus can do to a mondeo)... The GS has been pushed back in to everyday use.. a 100 miles round trip from deepest essex to newmarker suffolk.

On tuesday morning I couldn;t find my ear plugs, so for the first time in ages I rode to work sans plugs.. And noticed some odd noises that were not there last time I rode the bike without the good old ear plugs!

Firstly for a few minutes after start up I'm getting a kind of chirpy bird noise when revving the engine.. It appears to be coming from the front of the engine so I'm guessing its just the alternator belt slipping.. Although it does appear to only happen when using the clutch which is odd?

Secondly the bike seems to have got a destinct whine from the drive train, Which seems to come in about 3k in each gear and continues until I cant hear it because of the remus' blat. The noise does seem worse when cornering, which made me suspect the bearing in the bevel box, So I drained the oil (which was really clean, only a very few speks of dirt on the magnetic plug) and checked for play in the wheel.. which there doesn;t appear to be any!

So.. Any thoughts on things to check... Or should I just buy some more ear plugs?

Cheers, J

Noises

Belts make a shriek you'll hear that with plugs in!! just buy some plugs and don't worry, transmisions all whine, mine always has and now done 78.000
and still whines. My 1997 1100 RT was dreadful from new but after 35000
when I got the gs nothing changed all worked well, it's just that we ride two wheeled tractors! the Hitler video was possibly quite right about "Barvarian Tractors"!!

The whine could be tyre noise - the clue is in the fact that it gets noisier when cornering. I've had this occur on my K1200LT - I was convinced like you that something mechanical was about to fall apart but it was the noise of the tread pattern. Might not be the case with yours but worth checking. :thumb

Cheers for the thoughts...

Tread pattern.. well that would make some sense as slight warn tourances do seem to cause a fair few vibes at certain lean angles.

Ah well.. I think I'll shove the ear plugs back in and then the noises will go away... Now does anyone know how to deal with the annoying little voices in my head?

:D J
