Got a phonecall from the local dealer today (astle grimsby) Apparently there's a recall out to check the wiring loom at some point on the frame.

If it's where i think it is (around the rear preload adjuster) It might be worth ringing up the local dealer to see if your bike is affected.

Can't find any info on the uk 650 site, i'll update this on wed with any info

recall

it makes sense, my mates' 05 dakar caught fire when he was riding it a few months back, it was all down to the wire loom rubbing on the top of the rear shock. BMW agreed to pay for all of the repair and it was really burnt out - bad press otherwise i guess

F650 Recall

Mine is going in on friday for a product enhancement.
It is the wiring by the preload adjuster

hmm, i guess it's a 'product enhancment' then, but astle's probably sees it as what it really is, a recall without calling it a recall :D

I'll find out on wed, i think it's going to be the wiring around the rear pre load adjuster as well, Got a wilbers shock on now so it possibly doesn't apply. Better to be safe tho.

That's a usefull site timpo, i've got it bookmarked now :thumb2

Recall

I've bought an 05 Dakar last week so thanks for the info. Dealer said nothing about it?

My 2005 Dakar caught fire about a year ago, the loom had been rubbing the top of the pre-load adjuster.

CW Motorcycles of Dorchester charged me £200 to replace the loom after discussions with BMW.

@ tully, you were lucky not to pay, or was I unlucky?

The F650 was the second BMW I've had catch fire!

"un-official recall"

i called the dealer i got my 05 dakar from and they calmly said i can book it in to have the wires looked at - re-routed - FREE OF CHARGE, i had not been contacted by them.

BMW - free.........mmmm?

i just had the same thing with mine. they said its not a recall, but a "product enhancement", would take 15-20 mins and done free of charge.

he also said its safe to use before i get it done

Mine was safe up to the point where it shorted out, a big flash and flames from around the pre-load adjuster as the battery shorts out and the engine cuts.

Great if you're in the outside lane of a motorway! Luckily when the above happened to us we had left the motorway.

I removed the loom myself before sending it to CW's, there were a few places where the fabric tape, that binds the cables as one, had worn through revealing the pvc insulation. The insulation was not worn through to the copper conductors but on a bike that had done just over 12,000 miles it would have within the next 12,000 causing intermittent faults.

My 2000 Gs went fouryears ago - the harness was rubbing against the back of the shock preload adjuster.

The bike was still under extended warrenty

The harness shorted out in a big was, err toast.

After waiting four weeks to get it examined in the only dealer for 800km and another six weeks for BMW Australia to make up their mind I was offered a new harness if I paid 50% of the cost - $950- for the harness and $700- to fit it.

It was cheaper than making a new harness so I agreed, only to be told - nil stock of the ABS type harness which I needed, no ETA for new stock, possibly 22/26 weeks.

As I had already waited 10 weeks it was lookinh like 40 weeks for a warrenty repair.

Perhaps.

I was luck enough to find a almost new harness in Salt Lake City and it arrived within a week , less the $200 - including postage.

I took it to the dealer to fit- I didnt know if anything else had been damaged by the short circuit and didnt want blamed for it if it was.

Five weeks later the bike was ready to be picked up, but only after I paid the full cost of the fitting as "BMW only fit new parts under warranty.

So if there is no stock - no warranty.

It has taken them four years to admit there is a fault- hopefully they will be picking up the full tab now.

Might even see if they will pay for the one I had replaced-

Fat chance
