rear wheel is out of true and furthermore, when the rear wheel goes around, the caliper moves in and out

I have no idea how long this has been going on for because I never checked it when new

Dealer does not think that the disk is warped and thinks that the drive mounting plate could have been machined incorrectly

Anyone elso got ' Fred Flintstone' wheels ?
:D

Yep - I had that - the wheel was replaced at the 600 mile service. I think mine had 3mm of run-out.

Picked my R1200GS adventure up in Nov 07 brand new. Rode it home and mate following said " Your rear wheel looks buckled" I put it on the centre stand and B.....r me he was right. You can imagine how pleased I was. Took it straight back to the dealer who to be fair were brilliant.

It didn't feel buckled when ridden and to be fair I don't think many would check on a PDI.
Dealer said they had just been told of a known fault with 5 wheels in Uk, mine was sixth. It was a production problem and the wheels were balanced buckled! I was assured that my bike had not been washed up on a beach on the south cost having fallen from a container ship!!

I got the demonstrator wheel fitted for 4 weeks awaiting new one. None in Uk or Germany.

Dealer got BMW Uk on board and I ended up dealing with customer service manager. I had a moan and then paused for breath.............. and then had another moan. They then offered me an Akrapovic exhaust silencer worth £497 for FREE. I stopped moaning at that point and am now the proud owner of said exhaust.

Bottom line is it is worth contacting BMW customer services. I would lay money on it that they know which batch of wheels were faulty and what production run of bikes would have been affected. Mine was in BMW Uk storage for 30 days prior to odering it so in all about 5 or 6weeks takes it back to late September 07 coming into UK if that helps.

U don't get anything unless you try. Good luck

My '06 GS had the same problem with 2mm runout on my rear wheel. The BMW spec sheet specifies 1.5mm as max runout. I couldn't really feel it when riding but it looked terrible from behind and I suspected it might have caused the the slight weave at over 200kph. Mine was replaced under warranty with no arguments even by my hopeless dealer. The new one still has a slight wobble but is well under 1mm now and the whole bike actually feels smoother.

My GSA was an 8th Sept 07 delivery

It is not just my wheel that is out ( laterally and vertically), the caliper also moves, so the mounting plate is also feared faulty.

I cannot feel it at all when riding, bit it looks BAD.
:D

are you sure the wheel has not got something trapped behind it on the machined surface where it mounts?

if the disc is moving the caliper, it's not just the common buckled/skewed rim.

Like cookie says, the disk is bolted to the hub not the wheel so if the caliper is going in and out then either the brake disk is very badly warped or mounted incorrectly, or the hub itself is to blame. If the hub is the problem then even a 'good' wheel would appear to wobble

A mis-aligned caliper would not cause this problem as it would press equally on the same part of a 'good' disk

Rear wheel

This is crazy i bought my 07 gsa in Nov i checked the rear wheel after reading something on our site about the wheels being out of line laterally and horisontaly it was so bad i have never seen anything like this , i rang the dealership and told them, the answer given was they know they have had problems just bring it back and they would swap it out i did this but thinking all would be fine after they refitted it i rode home and checked it only to find it was worse than the one they had replaced i spoke to them again asking if they had checked it after refitting they said it was intolerance (what F******* tolerance) this was really bad and i also noticed the disc was moving the caliper in and out on its floating pins as well still the same day i rode back and showed them they all agreed along with their technition that not only was not just the wheel out laterally and horisontally but the hub was not machined correctly and the drive unit was not correct aswell. The bike was picked up from my house refitted with a third rear wheel ,new disc, pads and final drive unit and returned a day latter (yesterday). On my inspection i was amazed that the wheel ,new disc and rear unit were as bad as before all of this has been definately swapped out as i had marked the items of change .I instantly called the dealership .They said that although they had carried out the work they were not satisfied with the items fitted and know exactly what i was upset with , i said how can anything this bad get through quality control and become fitted the bike they didnt know they aknowledged there is a problem with many 07 final drives and hub/wheel assemblies i said go to the show room and check an 08 model they said they had and it was as bad and they had submitted a PUMA fault thingy to BMW headquarters and my problem will be dealt with asap, i will wait and see. So i think all of us should check our rear wheels and hubs because they will deal with it but it seems its not just us 07s but 08s as well.. Good Luck!

Thanks Panzer, I am intrigued because I left the dealer to contact me when they had decided what to do and there must be some unknown reason for the delay, because he is truly not sure at this stage

I could tell you something else about the 07 and 08 final drives... they have an extra water seal, which on my bike is making noises, which are supposed to disappear after a few miles. 2200 miles and I have noises as well as a Fred Flintstone wheel !

:D

Blah blah blah............... I had a moan and then paused for breath.............. and then had another moan. They then offered me an Akrapovic exhaust silencer worth £497 for FREE. ........

Bastard!

Double bastard

You jammy git!!!!

Panzer, is your bike fixed yet ? Work on mine has not started because I am still waiting for the dealer who is thinking what to do. Meanwhile wheel is still not true and tne caliper still goes in and out :nenau

Are you saying your rear caliper moves? If so, it's got nothing to do with the wheel 'cos they're independant! Surely some mistake?

Andy

Yes Andy

I have two problems

1) The wheel is not true

That could be due to incorrect truing or a badly machined mounting plate

2) the caliper moves in and out as the wheel moves around

Either warped disk or ??? whatever
:D

I got the same issue. Wheel appears buckled and caliper moving from side to side as the wheel turns. I think a local dealer is going to put a new wheel and disc on, wouldnt accept the hub/drive could be out. I can understand tolerances on wheels but surely the caliper should not move side to side under any circumstances. MOTs can be failed on what apperars to be warped discs.

I see there is a bit in MCN this week about it, with a nice captioned picture of the wrong bike!! (Its a GS, not a GSA in case you havent got a copy)

MCN....

I've stopped buying MCN for simple things like that and oh yes another reason..........................................................................it's crap.

My GSA probs with the rear end are STILL ongoing...
Wheel bearing was diagnosed as a failure by the dealer (2200 miles) and replaced. Bearing had become very noisy and play OK in one direction but bad when turned 90 deg.
I think that has sorted the wheel imbalance and then allowed the dealer to measure run outs of the wheel and the disk

Disk replaced and found the caliper movement worse with a new disk!
Bike back in again for the third time next week for replacement of the 'carrier' in case it was 'machined incorrectly' :(

I must buy a copy of MCN to see what you are talking about
:D
