I see the maintenance schedule of my 12GS and talks about a service every 10K Km and an inspection every 20K Km.

Coming from the Dakar I remember a simpler (?) "every 5K you take it to the dealer, once for oil (and little misc stuff like filter) only, once for full service and the same circle again and again".

How close is the above scenario with 12GS schedule?
I've only done the 1K Km service and I wonder when should be the next time I take it to the dealer. 10K? Or 5K for oil?

Stupid question to some of you, but take the time to give a nice clean answer please.

The older boxers used to be 5,000 miles then later went to 6,000.

Essentially yes you are correct........every 6,000 oil & filter and valves and a look over and every 12,000 a few extras - though trans oils these days seem to have longer intervals - I think it depends on exact year of bike.

Of course it used to be simpler..............or was it? It really isn't rocket science though I know that the dealers and BMW try to make it more difficult.

Plugs last so much longer these days.........and the rocker cover gaskets no longer need changing all the time - though I bet the dealers like to change them every time!

So to make it more clear:

12GS has DOUBLE the mileage for the oil and full service maintenances of the Dakar?

My next visit will be at 10K for oil? And 20K for full service???

If you are on a 100 GS Dakar - do your basic oil service at 5,000 and full service at 10,000.............(or even 6,000 & 12,000 like the 1200s)

sorry talking about 650GS Dakar

my question though is about the 12GS

and please make clear whether you talk in miles or Km

NLS - your bike goes to the dealer every 10000kms
at 10, 30, 50000km etc, its a 'light' service - oil etc
at 20, 40, 60000kms etc, its a 'full' service - tappet adjustment etc

Hows that:)

As I understand it
Service every 10 000 km - one minor, next one major, next one monor, etc
BUT if you do less than 10 000 - then take it in at least once a year
This is preventative maintenance - gives BMW a chance to inspect the bike

Not quite right ;)

Tappets should also be checked at the 10000km :)

Main difference between the 2 is that some consumables such as airfilter are replaced on the 20000km service. sparkplugs changed on the 40000km along with gearbox oil. Alternator belt changed at 60000km

I moved to the US a couple of years ago and make it my mission to convert everyone I meet to metric..............I have a job on my hands! Though in your case I was talking miles - even the UK won't change to kms!

thanks people for clearing this out for me - good news!

(same oil for 10k! wow)
