a somewhat simplistic view.
read the specs on the can, if you don't understand them (and it appears you don't) just buy the stuff from bmw. i'm sure you'll be happier.

Why not phone the oil company they will be pleasd to advise. Talking to a castrol rep a few years ago "what is agricultural oil" i asked, reply, no different to ordinary oil but cheaper 'cos farmers would not buy it otherwise and from the farmers I've known (tight wads plus!) I belive it.

So a "Not for road use" exhaust can is wrong if you happen to ride on the road then
only in the eyes of the law, not had any coppers check my engine oil yet
Quite extraordinary, my point is that it is not recommended by the manufacturers and thats why they put 'For Diesel Engines' on the can! Simply because some people are so tight they would rather use diesel oil from work in their expensive BMW engines than use oil specifically designed for the purpose doesn't mean that should be the recommended practice!
And no I dont buy oil from BMW, I buy the proper oil from wherever is selling it the cheapest (it also happens to be the oil that Steptoe uses).
and my point is, it's not what's in big letters on the front of the can, it's the specs in small letters on the back.
in a word: marketing.

I ran my FJ1200 on Morris 20w-50 diesel grade engine oil for ages. Yup, it sure was cheap. However, it used far less oil maybe because it (the oil) was more suited to high temperature running.
The only downside was on cold morning start-up. Listening to my FJ trying to overcome the somewhat "thicker" lubricant for a half second.
A true road-shagger...

Yes it is, but how many people are going to check/understand the oil spec codes in small letters on the back? And yes its true there are a few oils that are suitable for both but in most cases the manufacturers differentiate between diesel and petrol engine oil by writing its suitability on the front in big letters.I rest my case.
