97 r 1100 gs 50,000 km. iam getting a sharp jerk in 3rd gear on occasions, not actually jumping out of gear, just a good clunk. is this the beginning of something terminal ? o/wise gearbox smooth and quiet. anyone had any experience of this type of thing, seems pretty low mileage to hv thissort of problem.

big lad or was it big col had this problem ( well it sounds the same, big- whoever will know), he said it's something in the gearbox, can't remember, PM them and find out.

:) :)

thanks reply, cant find a big col or big man any other clues. must point out iam a complete muppet with computers and not entirley sure of my way around this site yet.

its Big Lad, ------- big col is in the UAE . PM him.

I think you might have to be a Forum sponser before you can play properly

:) :)

I had the same thing in second gear, only if I changed down to second and then accelerated, there was not a problem changing from first to second and accelerating. A faulty / sticky transmission shock absorber was thought to be the problem. I rode the bike for six months on a 120 mile daily commute without any futher problem until I managed to find a second hand geatrbox at the right price. I think maverick had similar problems so you could check with him.

The 94'-95' Models came out with a problem as you described. So far there has been speculation that it is the inputshaft cam spring that is not strong enough to engage both cams on the shaft. Mine did it in 2nd and 5th gear. There is a bearing modification which is more a different type of bearing you can install that sorts the problem.

Rob Farmer had his 1100 done and no further problems. I had mine done and did excatly the same thing after 20 miles. Eventually I lost the plot and waited for a good 2nd hand 97' onwards gearbox to come along. I now have fitted a r1100R gearbox with no significant difference noticed by me a mere mortal. The gear ratio's seem the same it rides the same so would not be able to comment, all I care about is it works.

You will have more luck finding a R1100r gearbox than a R1100GS gearbox. If you can replace the gearbox for under £400 don't waste your time on the bearing mods. I was fortunenate to get one for £160 and two clutch & pressure plates(a different story altogether due to stupidity)

Cheers
