1100GS broken in Austria

Made of cheese clutch actuating arm has snapped. Stainless steel new part on its way from motorworks.

Is there a trick to refitting? Or is it just a mare to get the bolt out.

Any help.. Pics. Anything. Appreciated.

If worse comes to the worst it will have to go to Lienz BMW. But prefer (obviously) to fix it DIY.. Or. Does anyone know of an independent local.

I'm currently at Tassenbach.. Camping Lienzer dolomiten.

Any help.. Hugely appreciated.

It's a pita to do with the swingarm on but possible, I have done it a few times. You cannot see at all so have to do it by feel and your fingers need to be slim and bend always...... I found it easiest to grind a small point on the bolt with a bench grinder which helped to locate and start the thread. The easiest way to do it is to remove the swingarm then you have free access to it and can see what you are doing.

Fixed... And rockin and a-rolling into yon Dolomites mañana. Where hopefully it will be cooler than the 33c its been here today. Btw... Absolutely epic rockslide has destroyed the road south of the tauern tunnel... Nice picturesque umleitung in operation.

Loving this......parts failure, mild concern, then 24 hours later back with a post that is all about the ride and the experience of it, not even a mention of the 'problem'

If this had been in the toilet section, It'd have been up to page 20 before someone had even said anything remotely sensible, and it would have been an epic saga of recovery, blame and insurance claims, not fit for purpose/angst etc.....then of course Engineer would have piped up and said it was all your fault and the bikes are perfect


Fekk all that.......you sir have your priorities right and a bang-on attitude to it....Hope you have a fantastic 'rest of trip'

I was going to add a taper ground bolt needs a nut running down so the threads start. Clearly that's all pointless techie b-x.

I don't see the point of flapping. I ummed and aahed overnight about the 'possibilities' - my mate needed to be back in the UK by last night (tuesday) at the latest. And he was reliant on me (his first big trip) for the tent and routing. so, he leaving me there wasn't an option. In the morning I decided that i simply couldn't wait for the part to arrive, something needed to be done immediately. So, a call to carole nash to arrange for the bike to be picked up. Carole nash also contacted BMW Kaprun on my behalf and they called me to say that they could with some certainty fix the problem that day. (unless the shaft needed removal - a small risk). Recovery van turned up at 11. We arrived at kaprun around 1 and the guys got stuck in. part removed from a '2nd hand 11RS and installed on my bike. I got back to the campsite at about 7. And next morning we were off again.

I was lucky they had a donor bike. although not impossible, I didn't fancy the idea of riding from Kaprun/Zell am See. back to the east mids in 24hrs.

As it was, we had time for two days in the Dolomites, followed by a ride over to Swabia, followed by a ride up the B500 after having lunch at Triberg. it was a good trip. the hiccup didn't spoil it. An email today from the campsite owner telling me the part has been posted on to me.

Mine went when I was leaving the Hograost a few years ago. I decided to ride home, fully loaded, without using the clutch. 90 interesting miles!!
