Hello to all,
may be a simple one or something i haven't noticed in the dark but,,
whilst riding my 1999 1100gs home from work tonight i have had trouble selecting a few gears. The lever feels the same as it has always done i.e no slack and in same position. I could be in 2nd and it will not engage to 3rd the lever does not seem to go high enough ( i have tried different engine speeds) if i nudge the lever down a fraction then change up to 3rd it will go into gear.
The same happens in 4th it just wont engage 5 its as if the lever is stuck and it wont go high enough, if i change down a gear then go back up it will be fine. Then it might be fine for several changes throught the box and will randaomly start playing up again.
Can anyone help or advise

Cheers
Andy

If you look at the short linkage between the lever and the gearbox there is a cup and ball attachment each end take the linkage off and clean and lightly grease each end this is the usual cause of this problem also check the pivot where the lever bolts to footrest hanger.

Thanks John will try and get some time to do it in the light :)

Could be crap in around the pivot on the footpeg if its been ridden all winter ............ mine did similar a few weeks back so took it all apart, cleaned, re greased it and its been fine since

Andy,

Do yourself a favour and take the whole gearlever side footrest hanger off the bike, footrest, gearlever, the lot, its a lot less hassle.

The bolt that holds the gearlever onto the footrest assy is fekkin tight and loctited, I had to hold the footrest in a vice and use an allen key plus a bit of pipe to budge the gearlever bolt :anger

Once you've got it apart, give it a good clean up and grease, put some loctite on the thread, gearlever back in position and nip it all up.
Just check to make sure the lever is nice and free so it falls under its own weight, then assemble it all back onto the bike, makes a world of difference to the change :thumb2

Hot air gun on the footrest first to loosen the locktight.

If you've a Y piece fitted you can get to the bolt and undo/loosen it with the footrest hanger in place. The bike isn't going to move :D

Less trouble than putting it in a vice.

I have a Y piece and remus can to fit so i'l do that and the gear lever at the same time, thanks for the tip

I have the Y piece fitted and had hell and all problems getting mine loosened off and eventually gave up and took the whole assembly off before i could get the bolt to release and that was using a small pipe to extend the leverage on the allen key.

Might have managed it if i had a lift to raise the bike off the deck to get more leverage with a longer piece of tubing but hey ho, its done now ;)

I think that's what I said, lot less hassle than fannying around on your hands and knees burning the paint off your footrest hangar with a heat gun :rob

Mine seems to be free and changes gear fine except sometimes going 1st -2nd sticks in neutral - pain in the ass!! Should I do above strip down???
Have adjusted lever down a bit but still same???
