Hi all

After years of bikes of all sorts including several airheads and a K100 I have gone and bought a 1100GS it is a Jap import 94 model in red with about 30K on the clock it seems to go alright but i have a few questions need answering. Jap models dont have the fuel gauge so i would like to know how much is in the tank when the light comes on ( how many litres/miles have i got left ). The bike seems to lean over to far when on the side stand is this normal as it does not seem to be worn much? also the indicators seem to flash very fast ( is the relay the wrong one ).
There are a couple of things need sorting like one bar end weight is missing, also one injector cover, the right hand plastic cover below the tank both mounting lags are broken off. also the rear wheel rim is heavily soiled it does not appear to be finished with anything. The bike has a plastic fuel tank which someone said should have been changed as they tended to leak, was this a factory recall or on a if it leaks we will replace it basis?
I look forward to any replies.

Cheers Graham

Graham,

Congratulations.

Mileage: I usually can get about 200 miles on a tank of gas, rural riding, one-up and not-loaded and 175 miles 2-up, loaded.

My reserve light comes on about 150-170 miles. Luckily, I've never tested exactly how far I go on reserve, but would guess 20-30 miles.

Side Stand: Perfectly normal, park on the level or uphill on the sidestand side. You could weld an extender to the foot of the stand.

Indicators: No idea, sorry...

Plastic tank: Supposedly replaced as a recall, but I still have mine and have no problems with it. It holds more fuel than its replacement, so if there is no problem with it, stick with it.

Best of luck with it.

Hi,
The plastic tank is the best its two litres bigger than the others and if its empty you'll get over 24Litres into it. The light on mine comes on anywhere between 300 and 335KMs on my commute and the last time I almost run out I did 75KMS. You don't need to run out if your on the motorway, what happens is some petrol is left in the left hand lobe and swerving about about will get it to go to the right lobe. (stay safe)

The side stand is sometimes very bad depends on where you park it (re angle)

As for the petrol tanks being changed, some were and some were not, but it was due to paint quality rather than leaks. :D

For missing parts try ebay in germany. Or there is a "dealer" here called Steptoe, (watch out as he builds up your dependency slowly:D )

Indicators flashing fast usually means you have the wrong wattage bulbs fitted (too small).

..........or that one of the bulbs has blown or is loose in the socket

Hi

the sidestand is one of the "minor" problems that '94 GSs have among others. When i bougth mine (3 years ago) i got scared when parking it....tryed to compare with others and mine leaned more! The sidestand wasn't standard (was a litlle bit bigger: when closed it clanked on catalysator)...one year was enough to "crack" the carter and start spilling oil.
i've fixed it and bougth a standard sidestand. No problem what so ever until now.

Fuel consumption: i usually did 5,5 - 6,0 l/100km and ligth came on at 320/330 km. Now, since i've fitted a K&N filter she swallows 6,5 - 7 l/100km. (but breathes better)

I don't have that plastic cover on rigth injection as well (??)

Plastic tank....it's 2 l bigger indeed and it's ligther than the other. The problem is that plastic absorbs fuel gases and don't allow paint or stickers to glue to it! (that was what i read somewhere)

But it's a great bike!!!

Cheers

Buy an ice-hockey puck and bolt it to the bottom of the side-stand foot. Works a treat......

Thanks all

Cheers for all the answers, I shall look at modifying the stand, where would you advise buying the odd missing or broken bits from ( Genuine, pattern or breakers )?

Cheers Graham :)
