Just changed my fuel filter, prior to this, run the bike round the lanes to empty the tank, reserve light came on at 205 and returned home with 222 on the clock. Tank off and emptied residue into fuel can another 4.5 ltrs came out, potentially another 45 miles. However what is the unusable fuel residue in a tank?
Also is it possible to refit those fuel line clips and whats the best tool, otherwise new s/s screw type clips seems to be the answer.

222 miles with a gallon left in the tank. You must ride like an old woman.:D

Dont re-use the original clamps or use the worm type as replacements.
Use the ones with the nut and screw that clamp the pipe 360 degrees.
I believe the K series use the right replacement clamps..

Suprised myself, thats why i mentioned it, but you are partly correct travelled 160 miles back from the tunnel a couple of Fridays ago and from Dartford crossing to home struggled to exceed 40 mph due to road works and incidents. The rest was local mincing about.
Nice to get an idea of the miles left in the tank when the light comes on.
New fuel line clips sorted.

Hi, I planning a re-wire of my R1150GS including the fuel level sensor etc.
It looks as though I'm going to have to remove and or replace some of the 10mm and 13mm clips.
It's possible level them off, but how do I refit the clips or fit new ones?
Is a special tool needed?
Or do I buy screw clips?

Why do you need to replace the clips as part of a rewire?

Re the clips - I presume you are refering to those BMW 'use once' crimp fit ones? No special tool needed to remove those - just stick a screwdriver blade in and force the crimp appart. And Yep - use new stainless screw clips to replace

Exactly. Screwdriver gets them off, screw-on clips to replace.
And I thought I'd emptied my tank, (sweating on the last mile), light full on for ages, and I'd still to empty four and a half litres from it.

To reply to MB, one of the wires for the pump has snapped and I had to fit a pair of spade connectors as a by-pass.
Because of this and a couple of other scrappy bits of wiring mods, I have bought a good (I hope) new harness and fuel gauge sender (with pump etc)
The latter came with some of its hoses cut off so I need to remake the hoses to the injectors and maybe some others.
BTW where do the 10mm hoses inside the tank (for the breathers) terminate? At the filler somewhere?

the fuel light came on my bike this morning at 130miles! she had a full 20 litre tank on sunday morning! i commute to uni but that is a joke! i'm 70 miles short of my normal 200. the roundabouts of Milton Keynes dont help im sure!!!

If you've been tip-toeing around on slick brine covered roads the fuel from the left side of the tank won't have slopped over to the right where the pump pick-up is located. How much did you manage to get into your tank?

My record is 23.5 litres into a standard 1150GS tank.:D

But how many litres did it take to fill it back up again?
The fuel level float isn't all that accurate.
Otherwise it sounds like the bike needs to be set up properly.
Mine returns 45MPG at "enthusiastic" speeds and 54MPG when i'm trying to bore myself into a coma.

I replaced the filter and made the mistake of taking off the clips from the two overfill drains. . COuld not find another clip to replace them so I ended up just sliding them back onwithout. Seem ok so far. I got the "jubillee" type clips from motorworks for the hoses to and from the filter.

I just whip off the old filter and shove the new one on without changing clips... who process (once the tank is off and the unit out of tank of course) takes about 6 seconds. I don't see the need for new clips ever.. :nenau
