I have just fitted a y-piece and refitted to it the standard exhaust without measuring beforehand the tolerance between pannier and exhaust on the old (cat) fitting.http://www.ukgser.com/forums/images/smilies/mad.gif

Before I melt my pannier, would a kind owner of an 1150 with the BMW touring panniers be willing to tell me the gap between exhaust and pannier (especially on the horizontal plane)?

Thanks a lot

If you're using the standard silencer can, you should have no problems.

If you want to be doubly sure, order part no. ACA16611, heat shield, from Motorworks. It sticks to the pannier and protects it from any excess heat.

Just did a test run and the pannier heats up and the indicator is taking a bashing/melting....I think because the angle of the standard exhaust may have changed with the piece....so will need to think about a deflector plate plus the item you recommended

my experience suggests that remus Y pieces are not given much in the way of quality control, and the the joint angles can differ from one example to another.

fit can be something of a lottery.

with mine, I had a Y piece, fitted with a sandard can, and all it did was slightly blacken the indicator, never effected the pannier, now though, I have re fitted the cat and added a stubby, it sounds better and the outlet goes no where near the exhaust :augie

Well mine melted me pannier so when I had time, and after I epoxyresined a piece od thin alluminium over the scorced area of pannier I started on the exhaust. You should /may be able to cadge a 6inch bit od SS tube 1 1/2 OD dairy grade ( thinwall ) This fits tightly over the inner exhaust exit pipe. It is held in place with a strap thats attactched to the top 6 mm stud on the can then bolted through the wall of the tube. If yer follow, I have taken it a stage further now and put a slight kink/ angle in the tube so it exits parralel to the bike. - No probs since - HTHY

That sounds like a quality solution. Any chance of a picture of the new tube you have put on, as it sounds a good solution?

And what is the gap between the alu panel on the pannier and the can now?

As I am setting off next month on a 6000 mile+ trip, I had better get it right!

Thanks

Simon

I dont know about the quality bit but it works Simon. Bear in mind the bracket for the exhaust can is a rubber mounted jobby so loosen the clamp as it grips the Y piece line it all up with about 12mm 1/2inch of space between pann and side of can then tighten up. I have since removed the ally heat sheild and replaced with " chrome laggers tape" cos it looks neater

hot-box etcc

Certainly looks effective, Mick. Thanks for the pictures.

The gap is around 10 mill right now, so pretty much as you describe. Since the pannier does get hot with that clearance, I assume you are saying that this gap has worked for you with the " chrome laggers tape".

Could I tempt you into making another of those tubes/fittings for a suitable backhander?http://www.ukgser.com/forums/images/smilies/augie.gif
:augie Tried Motorworks but they just do a Remus one ie oval. Let me know

regards
Simon
