I see an add on a dealers web page for a final drive breather for an 1150 GS.

Does anyone know why a breather would be needed?

I've been running breathers on my bevel drives for close to 30 years now.

If one travels through deep enough water with a hot machine then the air cools quickly and sucks more in. If the unit is under water then it sucks in water instead, not a great idea.

Makes good sense

Where do you attach the breather to the drive? If you have a picture that would be much appreciated.

Did anyone actually had water in their final ?

Mine has been "submarining" a lot but so far.....

I've had water in my R80 G/S bevel drive box, during a Christmas trip in 1980. The bike was brand new before the trip and I hadn't done any modifications at all.

We travelled about 100 Klm's on a very hot dusty track and then we had to cross about five creeks in a row. I was travelling with three other trail bikes and I watched them cross the water to get an idea of depth then I hit the water.

The water was roughly just above the cylinder height and the first crossing was the longest, about 100 metres, because we entered the water went down or upstream for a bit then came out. That evening I checked the oil and it was infected with water.

So after that trip I dropped the oil twice in 100 Klm's and then attached a breather, which was a modified one from my R100/7.

Mick.
