1150 GS - Known Issues - Concerns

OK, currently riding a K1200LT and know these very well. I am just about to source a 1150 GS, 2001, 41 K and know nothing about them.
Anything I need to look out for mechanical or otherwise ?

Nothing really springs to mind.. general condition gives you a clue of how its been looked after.. service history is good, but a knowledgable seller who's done his own servicing is fine as well....

41k and its run in nicely...

left hand side cam chain tensioner. see if it has been updated

• ABS doesn't set if battery is low
• Rear wheel bearing can fail quickly if mileage high
• Front fork bridge corrodes
• Gearboxes can be weak - check for noise in each gear
• Oil contamination can cause clutch slip

Some of those, of course, are not limited to the 1150GS!

Crud

A few I have seen seem to have a lot of crud on the front of the engine right behind the front wheel, obviously mud and general crap thrown up there. How do you remove this and bring it back to the original condition.

Vibey

I've heard of 1150s being noticeably vibey if the throttle bodies gop out of balance - Though this probably isn't limited to the 1150.

Other than that they seem to be fine.

Crud off front of engine - if you've the time get the belt cover off and touch-up/spray. Otherwise I know that Wonder Wheels is good stuff (For the headers too) though you mustn't let it dry on as it's a bit perky.

Anyone in Bournemouth know this bike ?

Interested in a 2001 1150GS with 41K on the clock. It is Blue/White with panniers. Currently owned by a guy called Neil based in Bournemouth.
I know its a long shot but worth the chance. Anyone living in Bournemouth that can give it a quick once over for me before I commit to it over the net as I live at the far end of the rainbow you know.

Its what wonder woman drives ? or it could be some weak acid solution that if not removed thoroughly will eat into mag alloy components..

It can be a bit naughty if you don't rinse it off smartly but it does seem to work quite well. Didn't stop the headers going yucky brown soon after though...

Perhaps I just need to ride it harder!

Fender extender/mudflap is a V good idea too. Just look at the snags the 1200s are having with corrosion in this area.

I shaped & fitted an aluminium plate to the front crash bar cross brace, works a treat, fixed it with two appropriate sized armoured cable cleats, looks fine, cost just slightly above nowt.
