After months reading threads and posts in this forum, I finally took the plunge into the GS world by buying a late '04 1150 GSA with Hepco Becker Aluminium panniers and topcase, fog lights, high and low seats, and only 4000+ miles to it.

The decision to go for the 1150 GSA was never a spur of the moment for I paid US$13K for this baby. I have tested an 1100, 1150 and 1200 GSs. They are all likable bikes but I found one or two I didn't like with them. With the 1100, the gearing was ok but I miss an overdrive for the long open roads. Besides, the front end looked 80's. The 1150 was stable and much smoother, and the 12 was like a sportbike and very nimble. But I was disappointed in both on their tall first gear which is a disadvantage in off-road and in the snail-paced traffic jams we have here in the Philippines.

So I tried the 1150 GSA. At first I was concerned with its weight and height. But when i rode it, all doubts fizzled out. The excellent gear ratio I believed is key to to its superb handling and performance. I feel there is adequate power in all the gears that at 5th or 6th, I can even accelerate, and I am 6 ft. and 300 lbs. I had so much fun that I added 500 miles to it in just 3 days. I believe it would be a big mistake for BMW to use the 12GS gearing on their upcoming 12GSA. They should do as they did with the 1150GS and the GSA variant.

Happy New Year!

12GS is taller geared but is no problem off-road (IMHO) so I doubt it will be an issue with the new 1200ADV when you consider the weight difference between it and your 1150ADV. Top choice of bike though with the 1150Adv, a really tough looking bike. :thumb

Wow - a 1150 GS Adventure with 4,000 miles on the clock - now that's what I call a good Christmas present. :thumb

And all I got was a packet of highliters. :D :D

What weight difference?

1200Adv Dry, 223 Kgs. 1150Adv 232 Kgs.

Max Perm Weight, 1200Adv 475 Kgs. 1150Adv 470 Kgs.

Payload, 1200Adv 219 Kgs. 1150Adv 217 Kgs.

So the 1200 is 9 kgs lighter, can carry 5 Kgs more!

The 1200Adv will need a low 1st if it has to haul that weight about on trails. I wouldn't be surprised to see it as an option during it's model life.

Cheers for that Mike, I had no idea the new 1200ADV was that heavy. Maybe a lower gear mod will be introduced once they realise it's needed.

I agree, the Adventure is a good choice.

For Christmas I bought my self a brand new 1150 GSA Special Edition. I don't think there are many left. My only problem is that I am reluctant to get it dirty for the first time. I did manage to get 24 mils on the clock on New Years day though!

I can't wait for spring time!!

Well I will hopefully be the owner of the 1150GSA as soon as i find the one i want.. Cant wait

Can only get better from here..

I agree with choice.

I bought a new 1200GS as they came out nearly 2 years ago and never got on with it. I had gone into the dealers for a GSA but they talked me into a new 1200 sight unseen. Covered 6000 miles then sold her. I was niggled by the panniers, tank side pannels, flimsiness of it.
Have finally got aroud to buying the bike I wanted 2 years ago.

The GSA 1150 is an iconic beast! I don't care if its is slower, heavier or more like a tractor - it has the quality feel that makes me want to keep riding.

I 'spect the GSERs are going to be split 1200 vs 11**.

Each to their own - enjoy the Chrissie pressie.

Cheers.
