Just fiddling about on the bike fitting several of Steptoes S/S bits. I thought I'd take a first ever peek at the alternator belt. Got the 4 screws off easily, cover won't come off as the bars are in the way. Is there an easy way out of this problem, I don't want to have to take the bars off to do the belt when it becomes necessary . (It's done 22,000 miles)

I didn't want to be too forceful with the plastic cover, might just be the case of undoing the front nut & bolt on the bars. As it doesn't need to be done yet, I put the screws back. Thought I'd ask the wise for their trials & tribulations.

My guess would be undo the front bar nut and gently ( as gently as you can with a big F-off steel pipe) open up a gap to make the removal easiler.

Would removing the bash plate help, so that you can ease the alt' cover directly down?

I find that I need to remove the front bolt holding the two halves together, as well as loosen all other 'bar mounting bolts except the rearmost bolt on both sides. This should enable you to bend the bars out of the way to remove the cover.
If you use the nut (bolt?) on the end of the crankshaft to turn the engine to find TDC when checking your valves, now's a good time to drill a hole in your front cover that will allow a socket in to grip the nut (bolt) without having to remove the cover. From memory the hole will be centred exactly on the BMW roundel on the cover. I have simply covered the hole with some wide black tape. Works a treat and saves a lot of time.
