1150 starter motor noise

new bike to me, so dont know how long its being doing it

works fine, but noise is after engine started, its inside the starter/mechanism.

removed cleaned and installed, made no difference

wot next?

Not so easy to tell without a better description of noise - sorry. Does it sound like the starter motor is still trying to start the engine? I had this before on a R1100S and it was the starter button sticking and still firing the motor up!

Quick fix was pulling the button up after starting but I managed to fix it after buying a second-hand right side switch gear and transplanting the starter button - it can be done, even if Mr. BMW says it can't ...

If this isn't it then can you better describe the noise from the starter?

Could be sticky button, but my guess is you need a trace of grease on the pinion shaft and pinion teeth. Is it worse when starting from cold? Mine is like that, ok when hot.

The bike starts up fine, but its like a whirring noise that fades away, i wondered if it was the starter motor gear assembly not returning down the shaft quick enough, hence I cleaned it up and made sure it could slide with no resistance on the shaft.
Its nothing to do with the handlebar switch.

mine does it also. in cold weather it comes more noisy. it seems like pinion shaft does not come back after starting and the engine moves the pinion gear a little bit. maybe it is the wrong grease, which comes too fat in cold weather?

my thinking as well, hence the reason I cleaned it all out, to rmeove the crud build up, gear slides easily now, so was suprised to hear the noise again after install.
might take it apart and have a bit more of a look

Just had the same with mine, I thought it was the 'dog' gear not returning quickly enough. Took it off twice to clean and grease the shaft part. In the end I took it to a local starter and alternator specialist (yesterday). He took it to his bench and ran some power through, I was waiting in reception and heard exactly the same noise as when it was on the bike He then called me into the workshop to show me. A few miniutes later the whole starter was completely stripped down, he then cleaned everything in his parts washer, even put some parts into a sort of steam cleaner, then replaced one of the bushes on the end, re-greased it all, built it back up the powered it up.... lovely and quiet again

For the whole job he charged me £20.00 as it only needed one bush (even though he changed it to be on the safe side rather than needing it) and did it whilst I stood next to him.

Hope it helps, before taking it in I'd have put money on it being the 'dog' not returning fast enough

Had exactly this type of issue on my new to me 1150. Whipped the starter out, cleaned all the crud out with Jizer and put a tiny amount of copper grease on the shaft and ends of the teeth. put it back on and problem solved.

Was also only doing it from cold.

The armature shaft bearing at the end of the starter motor nearest the gear dries up and can cause this noise. be careful with lubrication of the gear pinion. It will work fine at first all greased up but the grease will allow muck to stick to it and cause problems in the future.
