As a new boy, I thought I had better get my question in quick as a few years back I was on the 1200LT forum and know how good the BMW fraternity is a helping. Forgive me guys but I have sinned for the last 6 years on a 1300ST, blandmobile, fast does what it says on the tim but its all so souless!
Hence, i am back and picking up my secondhand 2002 R1150 GS Next week, I want to fit a set of front crash bars as I thought one of the good ideas on the Pan was the tip over wings. can anyone point me in the direction of a decent set and are they easy to fit?

many thanks

SW Motech ...

.. for me, look here. Had them on my 1100 and they were 'tested' a couple of time :thumb

I bought my bike with engine bars fitted not sure what make but it does seem to involve removing the tank to fit them as they bolt to the frame under the tank so "easy to fit" it depends :nenau

I use Touratech bars plus Stanton headguards.Belt and braces job.:thumb
Whatever bars you get, make sure they can be taken off easily for oil changes.
Some have removable lower sections that attach to the bashplate mounting studs.
Dealers charge ££££££ just to remove bars for access.

Bars

Good idea to avoid BMW adventure bars, I fitted a pair to my 1150 and as
prophised by St. Eptoe I had an 80mph prang and the end of the horizontal bar dug in and the bike flipped over smashing screen, lights and front beak and fairing and bending handle bars. Crash bars not bad at all, just slightly
distorted. The 8mm bolt holding the bars on at the end of the horizontal
bars bolting into the engine was BENT! had a job to get it out but bars not too bad at all. Will be looking into hepco bars, a friend brought some about six months ago phoned him a eek ago for a progress report "havent had time to fit them"!!. Anyone tried these out for real i.e. good prang and how did they perfrom?. Any replies appreciated.

Crash bars

I vote for them also, been over on both sides at a standstill both in the same weekend :blast and only needed the crashbar paint touched up :thumb

I'm with Ian

Hepco & Becker, only need a coat of mat or silver Hammerite to keep em looking good.

sw motech ones here

simple fit ,good finish ,not 'tested' yet

you have to take the bottom bar under the bash plate out for oil changes .........but it only takes 2 mins

Both got Hepco and Becker on ours, the chrome ones from either motobins or motorworks, cant remember now. Nick fitted them all ok:

+ 1 For Hepco & Becker.

Got mine from Motorworks.

The bike fell off its side stand a couple of weeks ago, a quick rub down with sandpaper and a spray of black satin Hammerite and Robert is your Mother`s Brother.

I too am looking for the 'best bars in town'. Hepco and Becker seems to be in first place alongside the SW motech fayre. Motohaus are good for the motechs, where is the best for hepcos????

+1 for H&B. be warned about 'easy to fit' - don't rush it - or try it on your own. Can't remember the link but there's a good set of instructions somewhere on the web. After a year mine have pitted a bit (winter salt), but helped in a spill on the ice. Protected the bike well.

Happens every time. Your lucky, the ADV tank usually gets it as well. So the BMW £200 crashbars end up causing ££££ worth of damage. Remind me again, who designed them

H&B get in the way for valve clearances and alternator belt changes, so if your belt snaps while on the road you'll be a bit more than 5 minutes before your back on the road again.

H&B can damage the gearbox case in solid whacks, rare, but i have seen it happen. Again causing more damage than than having no bars.

Much cheaper and simpler using the rocker covers as sacrificial items.

No I wasent!, the tank got it as well!!, had a pair of the TT tank protectors
(ad tank) an earlier prang and these had saved the day. After the earlier re-build of the front end the right hand one got left off unbe known to me and the tank got a minor crunch!. (but dident leak)Still only slight and good old tank cover put back like new by Highway Leathers for £60. plus a bit of hammerite smooth. However the dog that caused all this died so he won't be doing it to any one else.
dave (dented )GS. ( reckon these bars are designed to keep bm spares moving along at a good rate!).
