Does anyones fuel pump noise (when you turn on ignition) ever vary?
To clarify, I had the tank off the other day and when I replaced it, the pump sounded, well, a bit squeeky compared to normal. Haven't ridden it since as the male end of one of the touratech QD fuel connectors decided to break off.

Does this sound like doom for my fuel pump? Never had a problem with it so don't know if this is an issue or not. Planning a long trip later this year and would like to know if its fecked.

Its an '00 bike and has just done 60k miles but am not aware if the pump has ever been replaced.

If it does need replacing, what is the likely cost??

Cheers

Probably just "charging" the fuel lines with fuel after air got in there whilst tank was off.
If it continues though.....................

Like spout says probably just pressuring up the lines. Mine makes a funny squeely noise for a split second after i've had the tank off or if the tank's about empty and the bikes on the sidestand. I'd be a bit more concerned if it did it all the time though.

Now that sounds good to me! The tank was pretty low too (easier to take off)

Will know for sure as soon as TT get round to sending my replacement QD fuel connectors.

As I'm planning on 'doing the Americas' later this year (three months and counting), can you get problems with fuel pumps as I've read some folks say they would take a spare- is that wise or just excessive ?

Cheers

Apply that logic and you`ll be taking a spare bike....anything can fail,on anything.

Apart from taking spares such as levers, bulbs and cables,I`d stop worrying and get on with it.

Depending on which of the America's you are going to you could swap it out before you go or just run the risk. In North America you are only a day or 2 away from a new one if it fails. South America could be a long wait. But don't take a spare! Replace it before you go and you then know it is OK and you have less crap to carry. :rob

Just for reference mine has been whining like a South African when Australia whips them in the Rugby :beerjug: for about 12,000 miles and it still works fine. If the fuel filter has any crap in it the whine seems to be louder (or if the tank is low). So I just keep the tank up near the top when possible and keep clean fuel filters on it.

Also the TT tank bag with side bags helps keep the noise to a level were it concerns me less :) :D :)

Mine whines like hell too. I can hear it wining when I do low speeds.
