I am just changing over from the black plastic panniers as fitted on my 2002 R1150GS adventurer to the aluminium pannier cases that will arrive shortly. I have removed the lock tumblers from my original black plastic panniers. Will these tumblers simply fit into the BMW aluminium panniers or will I have to modify the existing tumbler indexing plates that come with the aluminium panniers? Your comments please.

I'm pretty sure they are different - the bottom of the ones for the aluminium panniers has a casting on it...

Do you mean you're changing to the oem ali panniers for the 1150 or the 1200 ali panniers?

Changing to the original R1150GS adventure aluminium panniers from the black plastic ones as used on 1100GS and 1150GS standard models.

In regards to your comment Mike O, the tumblers I just removed from the black panniers also has a cast aluminium rectangular bit on it. Suspect, at worst I could transfer over the indexing plates from one tumbler to the other. Thank you for your interest and questions.

Yes, but the aluminium ones have a differently shaped part on the end, IIRC. Swapping the wafers over is no big deal (although you might have fun getting the barrels out of the aluminium panniers - I did :D).

You'll need two barrels per aluminium pannier, BTW

Your right about that Mike O, the two barrels per pannier.I forgot all about that! Where is the best place to get the wafers for the tumblers? Any suggestions ?

If the barrels are out of the your new panniers just swap the wafers around until they fit as close as possible then file down the excess. The barrels will then work on you ignition key.

If the barrels are still in the new panniers good luck to you Sir. :D

Hi Bill the locks are different you will need four locks for the panniers as the ends are different. I think they are around £30 per pannier. If you need any help give me a call. I may have some spare locks I'll have a look at the weekend and let you know on Saturday. Tony

Tony, thanks for this! The panniers will arrive next week complete with a key so will remove tumblers and attempt to convert over to my bike key and then send the original key back to the person I bought the panniers off of. If I get stuck will drop you a note for advise and or materials. Thanks again/
