1150GS revs rise but no extra power above 4000rpm

I hope someone can advise me on here. Several times over the weekkend run to/from Ripley I had trouble going over 4000rpm in E, I would wind the throttle on,the revs would rise about 800rpm but with no extra power, then fall back to 4000. ( This was with the bike properly warmed up and no sign of slip pulling away etc) It was like there was clutch slip above 4000.

Late on my run home it seemed to clear and I could wind it on towards 6000 with more power, although not pleasant to do, it showed it could be done.

Any ideas anyone??
 
I don't what E is but, what's the mileage of the clutch and will the rev's go higher?


I reckon it's your clutch slipping. :comfort
 
Checked out your previous posts, wanted to find a bit more about your bike, has it only 5000 miles from new on a 1999 bike?
Its unlikely to be a worn clutch if that's the case, possibly oil contaminated, that could come from the seal at back of box letting oil down clutch push-rod tube, cure that and you may get away without stripping the box out. :D
 
yes it is low miles

The bike has stood for a long time unused, 5000 miles in 12 years, now all of a sudden it does 800 miles in 4 weeks!

The oil issue is a distinct possibility so first off I will investigate that, what exactly do I need to do?

Any other suggestions please feel free, this is such an annoying problem. Could not overtake cars on the motorway at c75mph so got stuck several times which I am not used to doing at all!

'E' is the first letter of the German word for 'overdrive' and equates to 6th gear on an 1150.

I'll bet you really did know that...!

If the bike's mileage is really only 5k, then I'd vote for an oil leak causing the clutch to slip.:beer:

Yes, sounds like oil contamination. Either from the engine crank seal, gearbox input shaft seal, or the gearbox input shaft pushrod tunnel seal.
